my super budget double din GPS stereo
Hey everyone, from what I've seen stereos for cars are way more expensive here than in the US.
I've taken off the rear wall and roof of the cage and shifted the headunit back an inch so that the door can still open and close... the face is bulky and thick. I've made new holes that screw the headunit to the SVX cage frame. and this screws give support for not having a roof or rear panel. The SVX black plastic frame around the screen has been shaved at the top to accomodate the screen when ejecting and retracting. All this cost me $USD311 Features: GPS, TV, AUX (for whatever you want), video out (for another screen), Camera Input, DVD, SD, miniUSB, bluetooth, Ipod and so many bloody features. The unit goes in and out of modes eg if you're navigating and watching DVD it will pause the DVD, switch modes and tell you to turn right It's a pretty fast unit for a no brand, I haven't taken the plastic off so it hasn't registered my finger a couple of times. It has a place at the top of the screen where a brand name would go, so I think I'm gonna print of a little SUBARU or SVX logo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l255AOGqfvk Jordan. |

Re: my super budget double din GPS stereo
That's really cool - I have been seeing those units on ebay for a while.
Good working dealing with the door conundrum.

Re: my super budget double din GPS stereo
Keep us updated about functionality/how long it works for/etc.
From what I've found, the no-name brands tend to break much quicker, and that's why people pay for the expensive ones. I'm thinking about upgrading my touchscreen DVD player to a GPS capable unit, but don't feel like swallowing the $2k cost for a "Name Brand" one...

Re: my super budget double din GPS stereo
I hope it fits. When I did my install, I left it hanging out, and took the door off. Even with it that far out, I was still extremely hard pressed for room in the back, and had to do some fiddling for an hour or so to get the thing to fit. If I slid it back at all in the cage there'd be no way to have it fit in there.

Re: my super budget double din GPS stereo
Has anyone ever come up with a replacement panel, instead of the door, to act as a fixed surround for a double-DIN stereo like that?
The door is kinda cool, but a panel would allow the face to be just slightly recessed from flush... (considering the top-to-bottom bend toward the driver on the driver's side of the console) and maybe offer a bit more clearance at the back of the stereo, which from what I read, is quite cramped and quite hot back there.
