One odd thing I sent to my friend in Iraq that he appreciated - blank postcards from home so he could show people where he was from. Now if the seattle space needle gets blown up, it's my fault. He got annoyed with everyone sending him travel guides, he said "I'm not here to see old ruins, I'm here to create new ones." He went through a lot of eyedrops with all the sand.

Girly products/toiletries might be in short supply. I think I'm qualified to send a few of those.

Great suggestions! As far as girly stuff not sure but if you are willing go for it I guess? Eye drops do sound like they could come in handy. I had a nice suggestion list somewhere I misplaced.

More suggestions:

Beef jerky and lots of it. Stuff is like gold.
Uno and phase 10 cards. I'm sure they have plenty of regular cards.
Dice and game chips. Easy to get bored over there.
Dominos. Some guys really get into plying bones.
Energy bars, nuts, and dried fruits are real good as well.
Magazines. Make sure it what guys like. We once got a box of O mags.
Cheap little laser pointers. I got one and it was a fun toy.
Single drink mixes. All water and no flavor makes GI Joe a dull boy.

Don't send:
Porn. Against general order #1
Short term perishable foods. Shipping may take up to 3 weeks.
Weapons. They have what they need.

I spoke with an active duty solider in one of my classes. He suggested the following (He served over there)

Hygiene stuff (Deodorant, Eye drops anything to keep clean)
Beef Jerky is a hit there
He even suggested to me to replace mouthwash with alcohol (They don't check that he said) but I declined to do that.
Smokes and chew... Can't remember said something about saving someone's life with those lol.

Yeah, I heard name-brand cigs were in short supply over there, I guess the local ones aren't too popular. I sent my nonsmoking friend a few packs to trade, he said they were worth a ton. And I guess GI sunscreen is slime.

I'll do a care pack of girly/hygene products. Who knows, maybe tampons can be used to clean out guns?

Lol well still time before I am going to send it. I am attempting to gather as much money to contribute to it as possible. With holiday season and what not I'm not able to contribute as much as I'd like. Regardless I am putting as much away to help as I can(if my SVX would stop acting up

). I found a nice article of suggested items attached here.

Having spent over two years i Afghanistan myself,

pretty much anything you send will be used one way or the other.
FWIW:
that address is not one I recognize as an PO for Afghanistan, so not sure where this person is. My guess is she is a Marine (FPO=Fleet Post Office), and would likely be in Quandahar (south) if she is in Afghanistan.

if this is true- it is hoter than most other places, they are in the middle of the "120 days f wind" in addition to itmes you have already mentioned, ANY hand lotion products would be a good idea. sitting in a turret sucks the life out of your hands, face, arms. etc.

I've decided instead of hastily trying to send a few packages before Christmas I am going to gather more and possible wait a tab bit to send it out. All money donated is in a seperate account not being touch by me. I am contributing also and if anyone has any questions about anything please feel free to send a PM.

I was told by another solider also Name brand cig's are like gold out there. Beef jerky also. I will take into account the hand lotion thing, thanks ssnsltd for the suggestion. She is in the marines =D. So much I want to send but I'm attempting to hold out until I get my next check from school to which I will match any donations if that comes through soon.

Alright folks I'm gathering stuff! I know it seems like its taking awhile but I just don't want to send a bunch of junk. Another solider told me that churches send enough of that (not that they don't appreciate it )

I know it has been a little while since i last posted and I can't thank you folks enough who donated. I ordered a special kit from the USPS which is free and includes six priority boxes and tape. I appreciate the donations which will cover the shipping aspect of this It will take me a little bit longer to gather up items but when I do i will post many pictures of what I am sending.

Well Small update for anyone who cares

. Boxes came today (I ordered a set from post office). In it came six boxes total including 2x Flat Rate Box 2 11"x8.5"x5.5" (usable space) and 2 of the bigger ones (not sure of the size). Also Prioity tape role and soon I hope I will be able to package them up and send them off (the expensive part 12.99 I believe each box)
