Not hard at all but its much better if you combine it with doing the timing belts since you have to take them off and take the front main crank sprocket to get the oil pump off. The oil pump us directly behind the front main sprocket - the main shaft goes right through it.
It's even easier to do if you pull the radiator first to get more room to work. You don't need to, but it makes the job easier.

I'd try some engine oil cleaner to clear out the passages in the lifters before changing out the oil pump for your lifter noise. It is pretty common for the lifter passages to clog up but pretty rare for an oil pump to fail on an svx. I have never heard of a bad oil pump on an svx yet. It was pretty common for them to get weak on the older 1.8L engines.

Yes I would try running cleaner through first, its by far the quickest thing to try. I have 197.000 on mine and have no lifter noise as of yet! If the cleaner doesnt seem to help just for grins have the oil pressure checked it not a big deal. Then at least you will know how good you pump is. When the pump is week it will affect the weakest of the lifters. G luck, me

Lifter noise can also be caused by a bad O-ring on the pick-up tube in the oil pan, wheer the tube meets the block...when it goes bad, it lets air get sucked in with the oil, causing frothing, which make the lifters tick...
