Im New: How long can good 1992 last?
Im new here, i dont currently own a SVX but i test drove a black 1995 and now i really want one, sadly that one, which was a pristine car, was sold(for only 3900 too!) anyways ive read alot about tranny failures on early cars, and i was wondering how bad it is? on average how long id the early 1992s last, and whats the best youve heard of without a rebuild?
ive seen a few transmissions from 94+ cars for reasonable prices, so if i can pick up a good car otherwise for real cheap maybe it would be worth getting a 92, but ideally i need teh car to run well for atleast another year or so(5k or so) ideally atleast 3 years though Im looking at a local SVX thats got 106k and seems to be a pretty early 1992, im just wondering how possible it is that its tranny is still any good even if it hasnt been rebuilt? and if its okay right now will doing a fluid flush, adding a mild trans cooler, and shiftkit help maintain it for another 40k or so? I currently have a summer car but id like something refined and comfortable, thats still livid to drive(tactility) and thats where the SVX comes in, also my current summer car needs to go under the knife soon, the frame isnt rusted at all yet but god is it creeping up on it ![]() anyways thanks! Also once you buy the car does the color really matter?, the teals for instance look a bit goofy to me but as im not $$$$ would i eventually warm up to it most likely? Assuming the trans has been replaced/rebuilt, a good trans cooler has been added, and normal oil changes performed, an SVX should be good for at least 300,000 miles. The Network has "how-to's" for most things and the "Search" button is always your friend

Actually the teal ones were faster so I would buy it. Also if its got a SS sticker on it, its got abouit 20 more hp.

I had a 4EAT in my Pearl when I bought it a year ago. The tranny was replace about 18 months prior to me buying it. But then I became one of the converted and did a 6MT swap. If you know how to drive manual, a 5mt swap is the way to go.

Replaced Tranny
Actually you would be better off to buy a 92 that has already had the tranny replaced and hopefully by a Subaru Remanufactured tranny. These trannys have nearly all been updated with the latest modifications found in the 95 and later cars.
Everyone knows that the Green cars are the ugliest, cheapest and of course easiest to find and buy. The 92 greens were the most plentiful and hence cheapest. They are no faster or slower than any other car of the same year---just uglier. ![]() I had (still in family) a 94 FWD that had 200K miles and it and running strong. The tranny was replaced at 100K miles and rear wheel bearings replaced a couple times due to lousy installation by dealers. The last set were replaced by my nephew and I and I bet they will last a very very long time. The engine still does not use any oil and still looks clean even when ready for an oil change due to mileage. Replacement engines are relatively cheap because they are plentiful and last forever.
