Very Strange...

Ho hum, nothing to see here… it's just another one of those watery Old Boy suicides that happen every once in a while. What is it about Washington GOP insiders like Philip Merrill that compels them to take to the water, then take their own lives? Perhaps the most famous military-industrial-intelligence-complex figure to pull an Ophelia was former CIA chief William Colby, who abandoned a half-cooked dinner to take a one-way canoe trip to Nowheresville, back in 1996. Prior to that, there was CIA/Watergate and JFK-assassination figure John Paisley, whose manner of death was almost a mirror duplicate of Merrill's. Both men took solo sailboat rides on Chesapeake Bay, tied anchors around their ankles, stood on the edge of their vessels, put both barrels of a shotgun into their mouths, then simultaneously blew their own heads off whilst deftly tipping themselves into the briny deep. Quite the pair of finishing flourishes, separated by nearly three decades, and yet still somehow connected via both men's nebulous dealings with the shadowy shenanigans of the Bush Crime Family. Merrill, for instance, was awarded the Medal for Distinguished Service by the Defense Department back in 1988. He also served as a high-ranking NATO appointee and, despite amassing an impressive personal fortune in the private sector, was known to take on sensitive diplomatic and intelligence assignments from time to time. In other words, he seems to have been the kind of guy who played hard ball, at a high level, for a long time. And look where it got him: the cold, dark bottom of Chesapeake Bay.

Coincidence?

More Bush Admin Stupidity...

DHS Ruling Deals Administration a Setback

By Stephen Barr
Wednesday, June 28, 2006; Page D04

A federal appeals court left no doubt yesterday that the Bush administration overreached in fashioning new workplace rules for the Department of Homeland Security.

The department's regulation "renders 'collective bargaining' meaningless; and it is utterly unreasonable and thus impermissible, because it makes no sense on its own terms," the three-judge panel found.
Appeals Court Chief Judge Harry T. Edwards wrote the opinion.

The judges, at another point in a 50-page opinion, said, "The government's position not only defies the well-understood meaning of collective bargaining, it also defies common sense."

Like Osama Doesn't Know How To Move Money Around...

"A show of hands please -- Who else thinks it's funny that the National Review now wants New York Times reporters expelled from the White House briefing room, their credentials seized. Yet last year the National Review stood firmly behind Jeff Gannon, a former male escort with no journalism background who was working for an amateur right-wing propaganda site, and then defended his special right to be waved into White House briefings -- under an alias -- without having to sit for a formal FBI background check so he could toss softball questions at administration officials."
- Eric Boehlert, writing in the Huffington Post, on the conservative movement's increasingly dangerous myopia and hypocrisy.

Exercising That First Veto!!!

Picture a photo op of a different kind
By Rick Horowitz
Guest Columnist

It was touching. But then, it was designed to be touching. You don't surround the president of the United States with gurgling infants in their parents' arms and not expect to pluck some heartstrings.

From the photo-op shop that brought you soldiers and cyclists, black folks and banners: babies. Babies in the East Room.

And not just any babies. These were the babies the president calls "snowflakes" - babies who were "adopted" when they were still just frozen embryos, and who were brought to cooing, grinning life through in vitro fertilization.

Case closed, the president says. The "snowflakes" show that life is possible anywhere, that life is precious everywhere. So he vetoes the embryonic stem-cell research bill.

It's simple. It's straightforward. That's the way this president prefers things, simple and straightforward. Draw a line. Hold the line. So this is where he chooses to exercise his first veto in more than five years in the White House.

His choice. And he's willing to live with the consequences, political and otherwise.

But as long as we're on the subject of photo-ops, and as long as we're in the market for visuals with verve, I've got a couple of suggestions the White House might consider for the president's next appearance before the cameras. Call it working with a wider-angle lens.

My first suggestion: Keep everything exactly the same as it was on last Wednesday - the glamour of the East Room, the chairs filled with invited guests. Except that instead of happy, healthy babies, surround the president with the halt and the lame.

Babies included - but not just babies. Toddlers and tweens and teens, young adults and not-so-young adults, the middle-age and the elderly. And all of them with this in common: They have diabetes, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, spinal-cord injury - that might be eased, or even cured, with future advances in embryonic stem-cell research. Advances that could be delayed, or even denied, because of the president's veto.

If there's still room at the lectern,- and I realize there might not be - then include those people's loved ones, the parents and children, friends and relatives who most care about them, and who often care for them.

There are also plenty of other people who are healthy- for the moment. They can only imagine what it would be like to be stricken with some serious ailment. We'll just have to leave them out for now. We wouldn't want to violate the fire code.

"That's manipulative!" you're thinking. "Much too manipulative!" You're right. Putting a human face on such an emotional debate is almost like cheating. It would force people to confront the human costs of insisting that a microscopic clump of cells sitting in a freezer drawer has a stronger claim on our compassion than a suffering parent, child, spouse.

You're right - much too manipulative. So let's clear all those people out of the East Room. Instead of human beings there to symbolize pain and promise and possibilities denied, let's go for something a little less emotional. A little more inanimate.

Trash cans.

Trash cans, to symbolize where the vast, vast majority of those frozen embryos will end up, and where they'll continue to end up under the president's plan, doing absolutely no good for anyone.

Surround the president with trash cans, and we'll finally have a photo-op that means something.

Excellent article Bill.

The bottom line with Dubya is he has never grasped that "free will" concept. Thinking that a God would set that up for him just to see if he can keep from using it is shortsighted to say the least.

Dubya seems to forget that it's not the president's job to legislate morality. If I want my morals, I'll go to my church, not to the president.

And he seems perfectly content to stretch his powers under the constitution to do so.

If you want morals, go to your mommy and daddy. Not church.

For You Twisted, Drooling, Knuckle Dragging,

THREAD HIJACKERS!!!...

The United States Postal Service has created a stamp with a picture of President George W. Bush to honor his presidential achievements Unfortunately, the stamp has not been sticking to the envelopes. This has enraged the President, who has demanded a full investigation into the matter. After a month of testing, a special Presidential Commission has reached the following findings:
1. The stamp itself is fine, no problem found in printing process.
2. There is nothing wrong with the applied adhesive.
3. The general public is spitting on the wrong side.
