Torque converter/ trans removal

What is the best way to clean/flush torque converter (out of car)?

Also, when I removed the transmission, I had lots of difficulty- the lower portion would not move rearward, just the upper- it seemed something was bound. I finally removed the rear engine support and forced the rear of engine down thus helping the misalignment? I am worried I will never be able to reinstall. Any idea what was going on? Raising the tranny on output shaft did not help to realign.

Thanks

John

You need to support the front of the engine, or it will dive forward into the radiator as soon as it is free from the trans.

I recently used a ratcheting strap between the loop on the engine by the alternator to the bolt for the pitching stopper. With this you can hold the engine as it is supposed to be, and even tilt it back a little to make reassembly easier.

Good Luck!

Here is a picture of how I usually support the front of the engine. http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/fil...sSVX/33062.JPG A little ghetto I know but it work perfectly

That is a great idea. If all you have to do is put a cresent wrench on the fuse holder and window fluid tank, I will have it made.

what i am showing you is the 7/8" wrench that is leaning against the A/C bracket and sits on a TB bolt in one of the rad support sockets

torque converter/ tranny adjustments

Cleaning ideas for torque converter.

Anyone have experience rebuilding the tranny? Several question

the rebuild kit instructions quite clearly show fewer drive /driven plates than original- they used same illustrations as basis and removed a pair in several of the assemblies.

How critical are setting up and getting the clearance of the "stacks" of drive/driven plates?
Can someone offer critical do's and don'ts?

Thanks
John

I think he was joking Tom

Stevebsy, I love your idea. It is so simple and allows you to adjust the engine unlike all the other options. Very cool. Tom's is a great idea too if you don't have any straps around.

That was too funny Earl. Tom's idea is brilliant..much easier then a jack. too bad I did'nt realize this fact before tearing my motor mounts in half

For re-installing the trans, I loosened my motor mounts and jacked the engine from the front, to pitch it backward. That gave me more wiggle room when installing the replacement trans. good luck!

Talking repair done-works!

I "rebuilt" the svx transmission, replacing the friction and steels and the seals on the shafts. I now have 500 miles on the car-- WOW, transmission works great so far--- I see why the members of this forum love this car. I could not have had this car running like this without this forum. I have been on quite a few car forums/bulletin boards- none compare with this one-

Thanks

Can you give me a link to what one of these ratcheting straps looks like? I have an idea but not really sure where I can get one.

I'm in the middle of the swap right now getting ready to pull the trans.
