5MT Tranny Swap
Ok I am trying to gather all of the parts needed for this project. I am using Huck's How-to so I am trying to find parts that fit those descriptions. I do have some questions however to ensure I dont end up with a bunch of unusable transmissions.
![]() I am trying to find 92 Legacy transmission, I believe this is the clutch cable type... (if not direct me to a year that is) I was wondering what I should watch out for when getting a tranny(bad synchros or anything), since I am picking through junkyards. How do I tell if I have the component drive-shaft? As the fabrication stuff goes I dont know of anybody around me that can do it. I know the smallcar stuff is junk so is there any other "kits" out there that work better? Any other comments or suggestions would be nice. Dont worry I am not doing the labor myself, I am having a local SUBARU only shop do it. ![]() ![]()

Low mileage transmission. Preferably one with a warranty. I may be able to whip up a couple X-members if I have time to make a jig this weekend. Don't hold your breath though

Make sure the trans shifts into all gears and that the half axle stubs or wheels move when you turn the engine over (I realize you will be turning manually). Listen for any grinding. Pull the gear oil drain plug, stick you finger in and feel for any large chunks or anything out of the ordinary suck as a broken tooth off the gear. Some tiny particulate metal shavings will be normal.
A component DS has a universal joint in the middle. Look at one end of any Subaru drive shaft where it connects to either the rear end or the transmission. Both of these ends utilize a u-joint. If you want a component shaft you're looking for one that has this style joint in the middle. |

Any Legacy or Impreza from 90-96 Tranny will do (except the Turbo Legacy)
As for the drive shaft, best bet is to get one out of a manual Legacy, to modify for your car. (unless you have a split one already, then just have your front section leghtened)

The ACT Clutch kit is a good kit and is in the $400 range...
A clutch kit should contain all the wear parts for the clutch system, clutch plate, pressure plate, throw out bearing, pilot bearing, and an alignment tool. You'll still need the flywheel, flywheel bolts, and pressure plate bolts. I ran a cheap-o Legacy clutch in mine, and it was fine for day to day driving, but would slip under hard launches....
