How fast would an SVX be..
if it were a completely gutted 5spd? I was thinking about picking up a mustang gt or my buddy's 04 wrx with 300whp, but why spend 17-20k for something quick when I could get a cheap svx and strip it dry? It will be used for racing only.. I was wondering ballpark figures in the 1/4 (14's? 13's?) and how well it would handle with stock everything? When I say strip it dry I mean it'll have an engine with catless pipes, frame, windshield, and a driver's seat. Would this even be a good idea? How much would it weigh after this?

Might want to PM Benebob as they have the racer that was destined for the junkyard.

There is also a guy on the board (sorry forgot his name) who lives down in GA that gutted his SVX for the Grassroots Challenge. He ran a 13.8 on the quarter mile with partially functioning nitrous with a 4eat. I think his car weighs around 2900 lbs.

I just remembered dragstrip rules require all windows to be closed so I wouldn't be able to take them out. SCCA autocross rules require windows to be open though.. go figure.

From when I used to autocross in my civic.. they always made us roll the windows down and open the sunroof if possible. It was a safety thing so they could pull us out of the car if needed.

I've never heard of that rule. It think it would be safer with windows closed to keep our limbs in the car.
They don't care here if we run windows up or down at autox.

How would it be more safe to have the sunroof OPEN? weird.....
I agree though, you should look at the GRM car, it is completely stripped. On top of that, if you swap out the 4EAT for a 5MT it will also drop some weight. And don't forget wheels

yeah our wheels are rounded bricks
![]() and what difference does an open or closed sunroof make other than structural rigidity

rounded bricks? I think not. Have you ever had a SVX wheel in your hand? it isn't all that heavy. People have weighed them on the board, it was a while ago but I believe they weigh about 20 lbs. Not too bad for a stock wheel.

As for the windows for drag, you don't need them but you do need arm harnesses. It'll handle like S%^@ if you lighten it without lowering it. The weight loss down to our current weight of 2830 (only upper windows and windshield/rear then gut the inner door to loose yet) wet raised it up a good 3 inches all around. Think Buick Riviara. We could be easily running in the upper 13s without anything but a few drag tricks but really that is about as much fun as watching paint dry and then sticking around to watch it peel from age IMO. Remember the weight loss needs to be strategic. Higher is much better than lower (in fact lower can cost you a ton in handling as it actually raises your center of gravity). Bolts must be deleted as much as possible, brackets go, etc. As for the sunroof and structural rigidity? What is this now a Honda Dumb Soul? It has absolutely no structure to it what-so-ever and actually weighs about the same as replacing it with plexi (which by the way creates a greenhouse for ya keep the panel!!!). Convertables do need to be down as well acording to the SCCA- rain or shine!!! Wheels are actually quite light and strong for the time. 18ish is the weight.
