6k will give you a nice silver light.
OEMs are 4500-5500 if I recall. They are a little more yellow straight on. I made a mistake of getting 8k. They are nice but I could use 6k. Much more light output Remember, they are not legal till you have a full blown everything. I've covered that more than enough times.

Conclusion: You can't get serious light without going all the way. Anything else is sacrificing one area to improve another. Doug

I never trust anyone cutting and soldering my stuff except me. The 9012 & 9011 have a Light center of 1.25" from the base mount, the 9005 & 9006 have a 1.24" Light center so you would need to shim it .01" to move the filament into the right position. I would just buy the real 9012 bulbs and replace your sockets and shim them. Then you are not bound to the hack retrofit versions, you can get them for a few bucks at any parts store. Doug

Hey Guys Thanks for the input
So Doug, just to be clear i know there are compromises but for a plug and play system, i'm guessing you wouldn't think this thing is worth the $240. What would this upgrade be worth to you? With it's light output in the svx housing do you think it would be worth $100. Or would you even pay $50 for this mod. I'm just curious what you think the value of something like this is. It would give me an idea of how much of an improvement it would make. Thanks Clark |

I can't put a price on the retrofits because every one of them involves taking an HID capsule, cutting the base off and gluing it into a 9006 base. Therefore, they hold no value to me whatsoever.
Things I would recommend to improve lighting: 1. Clean the outer lens. 2. Replace the factory headlamp wiring with an upgrade kit like this one: http://suvlights.com/product_info.php?products_id=112 3. Do the 9005 Upgrade 4. If you still aren't happy, replace the headlamps or do the BMW real HID conversion. One thing to remember is that 10+ year old optics can be as little as 30% efficient as new. With corrosion of the housing and decay of the focusing lens, even throwing a ton of light into it, isn't going to get you any better light output than a new headlamp assembly. I suspect you won't get past step 2 or three before you are happy with the light. Doug

OEM systems have HIDs, correct projectors, and leveling system that your car or mine lacks. What does the leveling system do? When you hit a bump, it automatically lower the beam so that you don't shine that high lumen output light into the oncoming traffic. Safety thing.

there is no such restriction in PA, and i'm sure that there is no such restriction in other states. the only rule about headlights in PA, is that they have to turn on, turn off when the other beam comes on, and not deviate more than 4" from centered. www.pacode.com

while it might be legal to do such things in other states, is it worth the risk of a potentially dangerous situation for other drivers?
