hey all,
decieded to go ahead and order one of these aluminum rads instead of the crappy stock one...talked to a gentleman over at PWR who was very nice and also knowledgeable (chris i think his name was...)
anyhow, i asked him about the cap problem and he said it was only an issue on the first unit sent out, the "prototype". he assured me that all other radiators were not going to have any clearance issues.

BTW, if anyone still wants one get it fast! i ordered mine tuesday, and he said there were three left!

The question is, has anyone told Clint about the radiator cap?

Installed my rad today...i didn't have any clearance problems with cap at all. Mounting tabs for bottom of fans were 3/8 inch too low, but slight modification and everything else was ok. The capacity of the new rad seems huge compared to stock...it took a lot longer for fans to come on...I can't believe I was running the stock unit with epoxy...how it held pressure at all is a wonder.

Peachy

Glad to hear you had no clearance problems at the cap, Peach.

An observation I was wondering about, perhaps you who have installed the new PWR rad may notice a difference in the length of time the tranny gets to operating temp?
I have taken note of almost 20 min and about 12 miles, from cold weather temps to torque converter lockup this winter with temps round 10 to 30 degrees. I consider this a normal period of time. Perhaps others have other experiences.

My car has a stock rad, no hills other than ramp, and an easy driving technique. i.e. mile or so of side streets then a standard ecceleration to enter the freeway. The tranny is stock non-rebuilt with 104k if anyone thinks that may make a difference.

Got mine today. Looks great. Are you guys with cap problems sure you aren't turning it too far? It has an indentation for the proper alignment that it will pop into. You could then push it in and rotate it past that point but I think at that setting it compresses the pressure valve too much.

I spoke to Maria at PWR, yesterday. She gave the UPS tracking number to me. It should be delivered today. I'll keep everyone posted.

The Arrival

PWR's rad showed up today. I can see the issue with the cap, its not an issue as cap can be over tightend an 1/8 turn. Backed off to the stop aligns ears of cap correctly.

I have no welding experience, so can't claim to know anything about metal working. However, I have noticed that cut edges that can be seen inside the rad don't seem to be de-burred, I was wondering about others viewpiont on this aspect of the rad.

Also, has anyone flushed the rad prior to installation? Tranny fluid as well as coolent chambers...

I have no need to install rad soon, I will appreciate any feedback about performance over time from others who have taken part in this group buy.

I would like to take this moment to thank Chris for starting this group buy and everyone else who took part.

I think it may be a salvation for our transmission problems with excessive heat production.

John

Mine arrived as well.

FWIW
-To back the radiator cap off will mean it is not tightened down all the way. That last 1/8 turn tightens the cap up another notch.

- My outside edges are also raw, but not sharp enough to worry. I am going to take a file to the inside edges of the inlet and outlets. I have several sharp weld points which may or may not effect the performance. If anything does get inside the radiator I don’t want it to hang up on one of these and cause a blockage. This sure beats the crap out of the one I have now though!

- I doubt this will help out cooling the transmission all that much. Better than stock perhaps, but I intend to put a trans cooler in while I have the front end apart.

Actually, I will likely put in an oil cooler, replace the PS pump pipe cooler with a plate cooler, replace the water pump, thermostat, timing belt, seals, put in my phenolic spacers, knock sensors, all the vacuum lines, spark plugs, install an MSD Stacker, install stainless steel brake lines, put in ceramic brake pads, change the oil and trans fluid/filter. Oh yah, I have a miniature triple gage set I am going to mount.

I expect it to take a couple hours. . .

Could I get some pictures posted up of what they look like in the engine bay? (Up close and far away)... Also some pictures of the welding job and detail of the construction... Thanks much... I am looking to get one for "Gumby" but am not all that sure on the Quality.... Or if it is worth it... Please let me know what I should do... As it sits now I have 3 options... 1. Buy a new Aluminum Radiator... 2. Buy a new Radiator form Subaru.... 3. Search for a used Radiator....

Which one would youguys do?

Cap

I see what you guys mean about another step to the tabs. Usually don't you tighten the radiator cap to the furthest point? All cars I have ever owned were this way, but it is possible as I have always had oem radiators.

I received my radiator tonight. It was packed well. I removed it from the box and inspected it. It seem to be OK. I played with the radiator cap. It turns a bit past where the cap tabs line up parallel to the raidator. I was a bit disappointed in the finish grinding on the welding. I think that is because I am used to dealing with equipment for the pharacuetical industry. I would have liked better finish on welds.

I also received my bra (not manseire, Ron). I was a bra for SVXY that I purchased from an SVXer on the west coast.
