Dilemma...
I have a 1994 red SVXlsi and it is in great condition. Although it has 160,000 miles, the body is near perfect except for the usually very few side dings. The tires are like new, it has new brakes, rotors, and bearings. The interior is near perfect as well and the car has been driving perfectly until two weeks ago. I started getting slippage (flaring) in either third or fourth gear. The question is...do I spend the money for a new transmission and then have a great car (albeit with 160k and not knowing what wiull go wrong next) or do I try to get whatever I can on ebay? What is it worth? I figure about $2500 for a transmission. If I got $1500 on ebay and saved $2500 I might be better off. HELP!! I just don't know what to do.

What you have is a known commodity. What you might buy is a big question mark. If you really like your SVX and can see yourself keeping it for several more years, then you should.

If it was me, I'd keep it(depending on my financial status at the time) if you think about it, if you sell it for 1500, and put the 2500 with it... what car for $4000 would offer you anything close to what the SVX does.??? as far and wide as I have looked, for what the SVX is, there are NO other "alternatives" as reasonably priced...

Before you do anything, first adjust the TPS to .50 volts.
Adjust the band, or have it adjusted for you. Change your transmission fluid and filter. DO NOT HAVE IT POWER FLUSHED! That being said, Hmmmm, we don't have a red one . Is it Brilliant Red or Barcelona Red? The paint code is on the aluminum plate by the drivers shock tower under the hood. Don't tell Di.

Thanks for the replies so far. I really appreciate the advice. I am almost positive it is Barcelona Red. I will check. I'll ask the transmission shop to adjust the TPS and Band (brake band??) and change the fluid and filter and see what happens. My guess is once they get the car in the shop, they are going to want to sell a transmission job and will tell me that the things you recommended didn't work.

The Jersy Shore Meet is coming up on the 18th, I'm sure someone going there can adjust the TPS or adjust the brake band.
Is that a far drive for you? If it is slipping you don't want to take a long drive and burn it up. Maybe someone in your area can recomend a trustworthy shop?

Hey files.....can you elaborate on that please?? By power flushing do you mean what they do at jiffy lube and dealerships now where they suck it all out and replace it with clean fluids?? I thought that was the best way to get all the fluid changed and I was going to have it done soon. |

It is my experience, and that of others in the automotive repair fields, that unless a car has less than 20,000 miles since new, or a rebuild, or the last power flush, it could wash out any fibers/sludge/varnish/debris that are keeping the seals/O-rings from failing. There was recently a thread reguarding this, and the general agreement was that the Jiffy Lube process usually ended in failure. BTW, they make you sign a waver to say, when/if your trans fails, its not their fault Tom

Just a follow-up. I had my shop open the transmission pan and it was full of metal and the third gear was gone. I am going to be stuck for a transmission job and I guess I will be keeping the SVX for a while.

My original transmission stopped shifting at 133k miles. Seemed like a total loss of hydraulic pressure. I had it flushed by a dealer, per their recommendation, and it worked fine. For a week. I don't blame the flush - I blame the fact that I had a blockage, caused by clutch debris. That debris lowered the line pressure, causing the clutches to slip and damaging them further. Anyway, I agree, we have seen more than a few failures shortly after flushes. But I want a more in-depth study of why this happens before I say that replacing your fluid with a flush is a bad idea.
