Help figuring out www.subaruparts.com
Okay, I'm not sure when Porter is going to get his GC/Koni setup done, so I'm just looking around to see how much new struts would cost.
http://www.subaruparts.com/diag/?mod...category=210-A There's the subaruparts.com page for the front strut. Could someone tell me what the -29 and 2x- means? They have the strut listed for 2 different prices... $100... and $180... Does anyone know what the difference is? - Rob |

2 stut designs
Subaru changed the front strut design for the early SVX's and started using the new design on 10/10/92. If your car was produced on or after that date (VIN 109730 and up) you have the new style struts and can change struts one at a time. However, if you have a car built before 10/10/92 (before VIN 109730) you need to replace both struts at the same time in order for the car to sit correctly, because the struts you buy now will be different than the ones originally installed at the factory.
Also, the front strut mount design changed on 4/22/92 starting with VIN 109621. Again, before this date/VIN you need to replace both at the same time, and after this date/VIN you can replace one at a time. Dave |

Not a recommended procedure. Struts should always be replaced in pairs, particularly the front ones.

I didn't say it was recommended, just that you could. That's what Subaru says.

All I know is that when I bought struts from Subaruparts.com they had gone up in price. I thought I had recalled that they were about $350-360/set and they had jumped up to $400/set when I bought. Still about the cheapest around- I don't even want to think how much my local dealer would want for a full set. Bummer, but installation went slick and easy and it definitely helped the ride. For merely a $58 'deposit', I was able to 'borrow' a set of spring compressors from Checker Auto (without even having to buy something from them!!) I thought that at 120,000+ mi's. they were probably 'due'.

But wait... they revised the strut design, but somehow this site is still selling the old strut? Sorry. I don't buy it. I don't doubt they revised the struts, but the pricing on this site doens't make any freaking sense. So is 2x- or -29 the new strut? WHY!? And why would the one cost almost twice what the other costs?! That's a hell of a revision.

First of all I don't think that site is very accurate. You are looking for part numbers 20311PA001 and 20311PA011. No one has the old style struts for sale unless they are New Old Stock (they were ordered before Subaru stopped making them and have been sitting on a shelf for 14 years). Subaru stopped making them years ago. That's why you had to replace both struts if you had the older style.....your Suby dealer couldn't order one of the older struts and you couldn't mix 1 new style with 1 old style!
These struts from the dealer run about $130.00 each. The -29 and 2X- are two digit production codes. The -29 means "up to and through the ninth month of 92". The first digit is the last number of the year (1992) and the second digit is the month of production (9 is September). In this case it is not 100% accurate because the actual Subaru bulletin states that the strut change happened 10/10/92, but its close enough. The 2x- means "starting in the 10th month of 92 (October) and continuing on". Again the first digit is the last number of the year (1992) and in this case the letter X is used for 10 because Subaru wanted to stick to its two-digit format (210 is three digits, so X was substituted for 10). Again, not 100% accurate because some cars built in early October 1992 had the old style struts, but you get the picture. Dave p.s. November is Y and December is Z Last edited by red95svx; 01-20-2004 at 05:34 AM. |

I just bought for both sides a complete strut and coil spring with all spacers, rubber stabilizers dust covers, spring seats, spacers, helpers, strut mount caps, dust seals, and all nuts and bolts for my 94 LSI for $727.94 plus. That's both sides, everything top to bottom from my local dealer. No freight charges. I am waiting 3rd week for the dust covers from Japan. All other parts were in 10 days.
This essentially 15% off dealer list. I normally get 10% off but this was a larger order so he gave me the "mechanic shop" discount. The strut itself listed at $129.95 and the net was $110.46 I have also heard that Liberty Subaru in Paramus, NJ advertises in Car and Driver that they give 25% off on all Subaru parts but I have not checked that out. Can anyone from North East Jersey (SVX Commuter or IAMWHATIAM) confirm Liberty Discount. ------- Jerry ![]() |
