Transmission Fluid Change
Is changing the tranny fluid a difficult thing to do on the svx? I recently read that synethic is the best fluid to use with our cars, is this true?
Will changing the tranny fluid with an external transmission cooler present problems? Just thought i would get some insight on it, since i'll be getting my tranny rebuilt the end of next week and want to start off on the right foot. Thanks Chris |

It's pretty straightforward. You put in the same amount of oil you take out (6-7 Liters).
If you want to be a little more complete there is a screen filter you can change hiding behind the tranny oil pan. There's also the external filter that you can change if you don't know when it was changed last. If your tranny is getting rebuilt I would recommend changing the oil approx 1000 miles after the rebuild. Reason being there will be loose dirt, metal and other stuff left over while the tranny was apart. You will see it all in the oil when you change it. You probably won't want to use Synthetic for that first change just because it won't be in there for long and will be kinda expensive but then after use whatever ATF you want.

If you don't know, you fill it using the dipstick tube and a long funnel. Some have been able to get the fluid out, but didn't know where to put it back in. I mention this in case you didn't know. ![]()

External filter
CHANGE THE EXTERNAL FILTER WHEN IT IS REBUILT!!!! That is if you have one. I run Mobil 1 in mine simply b/c Redline doesn't say if its compatable with the fluid already in there where Mobile does. Also it has the highest verified flash and fire points (breakdown points for the fluid) temps I could find. Redline posts their stuff but I couldn't find it verified. Also you need to get a fluid with a good low temp viscosity as well. There is a subie TSB out there that says what the minimum requirements are. If you do a search on yahoo for it, it'll come up.

is having an external tranny filter the same as an external transmission cooler?

nope, a tranny cooler looks like a mini radiator while an external tranny filter looks more like a fuel filter.

I have some pictures in my locker of a transmission filter installation. That will show you what they look like. Both the filter and cooler are recommended for better transmission life.
