paint drying time?

I had my car painted recently and have been getting different views on the care of it. A lot of places say not to wax it for 6 months or so. Some even say not to use soap on it for a 'while'. The guy that painted it said that I could do whatever I wanted to do.

What's the scoop? Do I go to town and wash and wax?

Does anyone know of a good dressing to put on the rubber stripping at the windows.
