Then again, my charger is 30 years old. Did charge another battery with no problem. The gauge never goes over 5 amps.

Organic chemist here. Hydrogen gas could be released by overcharging a battery. And having blown up a balloon filled with hydrogen (for science of course), I know it can definitely cause a big enough explosion like what happened here.
