I bet the gasket got pinched out of the groove that it's supposed to sit in. Happens sometimes, and that's the corner least likely to be noticed if it were to happen. A little RTV on the corners isn't a bad idea, so it will hold them in place on the valve cover until you get them seated on the head.
That job is sooooooo easy with the engine on a stand...
