How about if you removed the door skin, giving very good access to the bar/beam. Once it's removed, replace the steel door with sheet aluminum, using the bare door frame as a template. It's a simple single curve down to where its covered by the plastic body cladding.
I have not done this myself, but if I make my "other" 92 claret into a drag carn I will certainly try. Aluminum dents very easily, but weighs next to nothing. Tom

ps; would aluminum be legal in your class?
