Keyless entry not working.... need help with programming

Hello again :)

I just picked up my first SVX yesterday, and have been going over everything to see what works and what doesn't.

I bought a Polo green 1996 LSi with 98,338 miles on it. I love it already, but have found a problem I would really like to get fixed.

I have 3 working remotes. By working, I mean that they function properly, have good batteries in them, and they do transmit a signal. I know this because I work as the Business Manager at a Subaru dealership and we have a remote transmitter tester that I checked them out on. I tried programming them according to the owners manual:
1-close the door
2-turn off the security system
3-turn key on then off
4-press security button on dash rapidly until horn blows

I have tried this numerous times, but when I get to step 4, I press the security button rapidly many many times, but the horn never beeps indicating it is in programming mode. I have asked one of our technicians, but he isn't familiar with the SVX.

Does anyone know another way to do this, or does this mean my keyless/security system is shot ?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The modual may not be working. Many members have had to replace it in order to get the remotes to work. I don't know that for sure, but that would be the next thing I would try. Good luck and welcome to the site. :)

Keyless

I had to replace the FOB, and everything was cool then.

If the system enters learning mode, and you don't hear the glovebox clicking, then it's the inside module.

Fuses?

Welcome to the site.

3 of them are not working with your car?

But would your SVX's alarm auto-arm if you use your key to lock the door?

Well, I just went out to see if the alarm would arm itself. The security light is lit. I locked the door manually from the inside and close the door with the window open. I look inside and the security light is still on. It is lit constantly, it is NOT flashing. I waited for 30 seconds, reached inside and unlocked the car by pulling up on the door lock. The alarm did not sound, and the lights did not flash. I then try locking the car with the key from the drivers door, reach into the open window and unlock it by pulling up on the inside lock. Same result. In short, nothing happened. I am totally confused.

Any ideas, anyone?

Can you lock the doors using the remote?

If the SECURITY switch is OFF (no light) you should still be able to lock/unlock the doors with the remote. With a normal operating system, you should get a few quick beeps in succession as a reminder that the system is off.

This is how the SECURITY light should operate.

Disarm system
Horn beeps twice, parking lights flash twice, doors unlock,
red light blinks rapidly until ignition is turned on, then red light goes off.

Once ignition is turned off, the red light blinks rapidly until the alarm is set.

Arming system
Horn beeps once, parking lights flash once, doors lock, red light will blink more slowly (once every 2 seconds) and continue until system is disarmed.

When disarming the system, if you hear 3 beeps of the horn, it means an attempted intrusion has occurred. The flashing red light in the SECURITY button will tell you what kind. See your owner's maunual for the description.

The remotes do absolutely nothing :(. I cannot lock or unlock the doors with the remotes, regardless of whether the security light is on or off. I cannot get the system into programming mode either. The red light is on constantly unless I push the switch to turn it off. The remote batteries are good, and the remotes are transmitting a signal (I had them tested) when the remote button is pushed, but it is not communicating with the car. I was told that if the keyless/security system was bad, that the dash light would not turn on at all. Regardless of what I try, I cannot get into programming mode, get the red light to flash, or get the remotes to lock/unlock the doors.

Help me Obi-wan, you're my only hope!

Where did these remotes come from? Did they ever work in this car?

If they were not programmed to YOUR car, then all the button-pressing in the world will not lock/unlock your doors. Much like standing in front of someone else's SVX.

If the batteries are good and transmitting a signal, it is not a signal that your car recognizes.

I believe the power locks should operate independently of the security system. On the "L" models, the security system is optional, while power locks are standard. So you could have an L model (with remotes) to lock and unlock your doors, even though you did not have a security system.

I checked the FSM for my 96 LSi and could not find any information. I don't know if a bad security control module would give you the red light lit as a default. I would think the light would not be on.

Could it be a bad switch in the cluster? They are easy to take out and replace. maybe a member here has a spare that you can try.

I think Earl should program a "Skeleton Remote" that locks/unlocks all his cars. One button press and he conducts an SVX symphony! :D

I have already done that. :p ;) :D :D

Can someone tell me where the security/keyless module is located in the car, and how hard it is to get to?

Thanks

If you have a passenger airbag, it is under the rear deck. It is accessable from the trunk by pulling away the top trim.

If you don't have the passenger airbag, it is in the area where the airbag would be. It is accessable by removing the glove box and pretending to be a proctologist.

The security module on the 1994's and up were mounted to the bottom of the rear deck inside the trunk, between the rear speakers. closer to thr left speaker. It is covered by the gray carpeted trim piece, with an opening access panel. You'll see to slide locks in the gray trim in the roof the the trunk. Slide those back, the access door opens, and you can see, remove, or adjust the module.

Other things in the same area are the seat belt timer, the fuel pump modulator and the rear wiper relay.
