Transmission jumping gears on highway.

My transmission is acting annoying.

1. In fourth, at highway speed (45-60 mph) it will jump from 4 to 3 for a second, then back to 4, hold that for a while (seconds, minutes, it varies), and do it again.

2. It also seems slow to lock the torque converter in 4th; it's revving maybe 1-200 RPM high at 60. When it's at the normal revs at 60 it stays there solidly without shifting.

3. About half the time I get a hard 1-2 upshift.

I've searched around and found a bunch of possible causes and solutions. Bad TPS, bad tranny resistor, brake band needs adjustment, transmission not reaching normal operating temperature, torqu converter gone gimpy, general tranny apocalypse...

I'm leaning toward bad TPS, because I also have an annoying hesitation from 1200-1600RPM, very much like there's a dead zone in the throttle. I'd like to know peoples thoughts on what else it could be though.

thats basicially what mine did when the tps was bad, changing it fixed the fast shifting around, and the slow lockup

Both 92s we have had those symptoms, plus another when the TPS was worn, both were fixed when TPS was replaced($197 each, 1st Subaru)..The third symptom was the idle speed. It would start off ~600-700rpm then increase to about 900-950rpm 15 to 20 minutes later...

Alright thanks guys, sounds like the TPS is the culprit. The major one at least.

I don't have the third symptom you described, processengr. My idle remains constant, according to the emmisions test I had done today, at 654 RPM, after about 30 minutes of driving.

Passed the emmisions test with flying colours too.:D

If anyone else has an opinion or thoughts on the matter, feel free to chime in.

Tps

I cleaned my throttle body out a few months ago, and had the same problem! Turned out I hadn't plugged the TPS in completely
