Need some quick help

So, from my search I think I found my answer, but I'm gonna double check :D

Recently replaced a busted 4EAT with a not busted 4EAT. In the process, I pulled the new transmission's fluid pan and filter. So, I THINK the transmission was 100% empty of fluid after that.

I re-filled the transmission with 8qts of ATF, and it reads high on the dip stick. However, I know the trans takes 10qts full capacity, and I've NEVER been able to get an accurate reading from the dip stick.

Here's where I need help...

It won't shift out of 1st gear. I'm guessing my fluid is low. Would that cause this problem?

Thanks

Mat

Did you run it and then check the level again. There could be air in the lines and then once it get out of the lines, the level would be low again. Check to see if it is full again. :)

Well, the dip stick still read fine, but on that transmission I've never been able to fill according to the dip stick. I added 1.5 more qts (total of 9.5) and she shifts great. WOOOOOO!

I am glad to hear that solved the problem. :)

Seems to me, the books say that a dry system is 13 qts.

I could be wrong, but I found it funny the first time I saw it too.
