Double the Joy

I recently came across a shop selling Strong Arm products locally.
Since shipping from the US is not always a viable option, I had to "improvise" with what is available. They don't have the SVX struts in stock. They simply bought a "shipment" of Strong Arm from the US and are selling it in pieces in my country. They are not even dealers for it.

Anyways, since my future project involves adding a [top secret] wing project which will add a few pounds here and there, I thought to fab something more durable for my car. After 80 hours in trial and error, I made it!

It works perfectly for my need :cool:

Nice job Danny! What happens when you hit the release on the stock trunk with the struts doubled up like that? Does it pop up like a speed-brake? ;)

Hello Glenn,

Unfortunately no. The trunk hinge system of the SVX does not allow the trunk to pop up as you think. But once it is half way, you simply.... cannot hold it from opening all the way :D

Seems like they open more smoothly than mine (the ebay lift support depot ones).

Care to share your design for the brackets (I'm assuming you made them yourself), and the specs on the struts? I may copy you if you don't mind :D

I don't mind sharing the measurements, but as a note you will need:
- grinder with cutting and grinding discs;
- welding machine;
- 13mm bolts, nuts, washers, locks;
- impact drill or drill bench;
- bench holding unit (whatshamacallit);
- 4mm iron plates;
- paint;
- some skills...

Just gimme some time, I am still testing the entire system. I might even make it better...

Thanks, I look forward to doing this; my trunk may as well not have any struts the way it is now!
And I have done a bit of fabrication before :)

I am going to give this place a try. Not only do they rebuild and recharge spent struts, but they also can adjust the pressure of the strut to accommodate different weights.

I know a few Ferrari guys who have rebuilt their Boxer engine cover struts using this company.

Re: Double the Joy

why would a double strut be necessary, how often do you open your trunk, that a single strut wouldnt be sufficient:confused:

He's fabricating a new fiberglass rear spoiler, which will add a few lbs to the trunk lid. The stock single struts are barely enough to lift the factory lid and wing. Let alone an additional 7 lbs or so.

I think a stronger recharge on a rebuilt set of single struts would suffice.

Close... I will be repositioning/lowering my current wing and adding a mechanism inside the trunk lid...
