Transmission Fluid Change

I need to change the transmission fluid, just got the car about a month and a half ago and the fluid is dirty. I got quoted at $165 for a change and synthetic flush. This might be easy to do yourself, but I really don't want to mess anything up with the transmission being that I just installed a cooler last week. Any thoughts?

that sounds a bit much, i had a guy that did my oil, trans and rear diff oil. all for 150. that was when i first got my car. no flush though. all synthetics. i supplied the gear oil, he took care of the rest.

If you can change your oil, you can change your ATF. There is a 17mm drain plug on the trans pan, drain it for a while, it will continue to dribble out for a few minutes.

With the trans you'll never completely drain it. The capacity is about 8-10 qts, you'll get 4-6 out of it. I usually add 4 qts back in then use the dipstick to get it right. Repeat 2 more times with a few hundred miles between changes and you should be good.

theres an internal and an external filter. go to redlightnings link, thats where you need to go :)

Re: Transmission Fluid Change

Only some had a stock external filter. Example mine never had one so I put in a permacool one.

the oil filter is the same as a porche 944 except its much bigger. it may be a bit more pricey but its worth it :)

That is only for engine oil, not the "recall" external transmission filter that was added on.

Re: Transmission Fluid Change

transmissions either have an internal or external, if you have both, thats just weird. my old 03 impreza had an external and it was just like changing the oil

Re: Transmission Fluid Change

Most SVX's have both an internal and external stock. Many owners have replaced the stock external, with a perma-cool filter.

All ATF Dex 3 isn't the same. There is a huge difference between breakdown temps. Get Mobil 1 full sythetic and IMHO there is no point to doing anything unless you put a gauge on your car and know when you reach that 180-210 range depending on your fluid. Once you cook it you must change it!;)

Any SVX that got the "campaign" or "recall" external filter. 92 and 93's were recalled and supposed to have them installed and I believe the later years got them from the factory as well as the internal screen. So yes, most SVX do have both an internal as well as external filter.
