Re: Just ordered my Strong Arm Hood Struts

I think the best, easiest and cheapest solution is the McMaster-Carr strut that can be bought in 90 or 120 lb models for $14.25 each. The part number is 4138T56. Check out pics by YourConfused sometime back simply by doing a search for McMaster.

Length is 17.13" with 6.3" stroke.

Re: Just ordered my Strong Arm Hood Struts

120 lbs. is WAY TOO MUCH. I had them (per the original writeup), and the few at Reading that experienced them also agreed that it's overload.

90 lbs. is the way to go.

I have this mod on all of my SVXs and am VERY pleased with the results.
My hood struts are good (for now), but my trunk struts are non-existent. Do you sell trunk struts also? If yes what's your cost? Peej has the wing if that makes a difference.

Any plans to offer them Mike? I would be interested in a set too. I am tired of lifting that heavy trunk.

Re: Just ordered my Strong Arm Hood Struts

I just wanted to wrap up this thread with a Thank you to the guys at All Wheel Drive. The hood struts were very nicely done and bolted right in. With the cores returned they actually were $6 cheaper than the materials cost for the 120lb struts from Napa, which I later learned were the wrong weight anyway.

In my opinion if you need hood struts this is your easiest and best option, but PLEASE return the cores or else they may not have cores available for the next guy.

I think I'm just getting my trunk struts from Subaru, from talking to a few owners at Reading nobody has really found the perfect replacement, they end up opening the trunk a bit too far or not quite far enough.

Re: Just ordered my Strong Arm Hood Struts

I have been unable to locate any struts that are even close to the correct length for the trunk re-build.
Don't think it will ever happen

Again, I say check the McMaster-Carr online catalog and I suspect there is something that will work. Look at pages 1029-1031. They sell multiple lengths and multiple forces from 15-130 lbs. Someone needs to measure the force on a really good set of stockers to see what it is. The overall length is approx 14 inces with stroke of approx 3.75 inches. The actual cylinder is only 6.75 inches long. The way I see it the "stroke" is not critical, but it must be close to the overall length of the stockers no matter the stroke.

They not only sell the cylinders but also numerous different mounting configurations.

The struts are also reasonably priced.

If you really want to get fancy you could even set up a remote activation device. That type would be a bit expensive though.

Re: Just ordered my Strong Arm Hood Struts

Once I get some time, I will do some experimentation with the trunk struts. I will keep everyone updated.
