Down on power-- No codes.

I swapped engines in my Claret recently. Following my service manuals, I replaced the head gaskets, etc, installed my redone heads from my old motor, etc.

After a host of small issues, losing storage space, etc, I worked on the car over the weekend.

Here is where I am at:

The car is currently hard to start (sometimes have to hold throttle open entirely) and too sluggish to drive anywhere safely.

-No CEL
-Fluids OK
-No irregular taps, knocks, squeaks, etc
-Car will start, but will not run at idle and is down on power
-Checked timing belt alignment (ok)
-Checked cam keyways (looked ok)
-Ran car without exhaust (checked for clogged cats)
-No noticeable vacuum leaks.
-Changed all under-intake solenoids
-Changed fuel filter
-New vacuum hoses, PCV
-New fuel hose from filter to engine

Any suggestions?

Does it bog with throttle even in neutral, or just under load?

Re: Down on power-- No codes.

The car bogs in neutral. Sorry, I should have clarified that.

Re: Down on power-- No codes.

How about a stuck open EGR? Or the solenoid controlled vacuum line is hooked up to the wrong port on the EGR vacuum modulator?

Ive never done the heads on the EG33, is there a chance the lower gear driven cam or cams could have been installed out of alignment with the belt driven cam.. borking your valve timing?

I'll try checking the EGR hoses next weekend when I see the car, but I am fairly certain they are on correctly. The EGR seemed to function okay when it was on my old motor.

I checked out the cam timing/alignment/marks already and everything looked okay.

Re: Down on power-- No codes.

Did you check the notches on the front shaft of the cam? Or did you just check the dots?

Re: Down on power-- No codes.

Hmm, know anyone with a smog machine? Does the exhaust smell rich or lean? If you can check what the exhaust is spitting out, such as too much O2 or unburnt fuel, it would help narrow possibilities.

You may end up having to do a compression check on all 6 just to eliminate the possibility if a head gasket leak or valve timing issue.

Both sides facing up, or one side up one side down?

Re: Down on power-- No codes.

Mike,

Have you given it time to warm up ever to see if anything changes?

clogged injector(s), bad coil(s)

Does it sound or feel like it is missing?

I assume these are all parts used that were just fine when they were on the previous engine but it could be possible for something to just not want to cooperate.

This was my next question. I know you are an able mechanic mike, but we are all human. At TDC I believe the driver side (L/H) cams should have the notches up and the passenger side notches should be down. (Hence Toms question)

Re: Down on power-- No codes.

I transplanted the heads one at a time, so I am sure that they are on the correct side. I see your point, but I've had everything apart and back together a few times and it was all in time according to the marks on the cam wheels, dots, etc etc. I misspoke about them being all up, i do believe, but I am intending on bringing my car to OTs on the trailer anyway. I dont have any more time or space to work on the car, and I won't see it again until the night I leave for the pumpkin carve anyway...
