Resonator

I took my car to the exhaust shop today to get rid of my rattle. He took off a few heat shields and cut out the rear resinator and put in a straight pipe. The car seems really wierd now, sluggish. I'm assuming he shouldn't have taken it off. He said that is was rattling and shouldn't make a big difference, but I notice it bigtime! I want it to not rattle and to be as it was before. Where can I get a new rear resonator? I looked on subaruparts.com, and they are like $300. Any where else to get one cheaper?

Re: Resinator

I have never heard of a car running "weird" due to the removal of the resonator in the exhaust system. They are typically there only to reduce the exhaust db level or to tailor the exhaust note. Granted N/A engines need a certain amount of back pressure but with cats and the muffler there should be an ample supply. Check to see if the O2 sensors or wiring was damaged. Do you have a CEL illuminated?

Re: Resinator

No CEL, and I just put in brand new O2 sensors a few weeks ago. At that time, I also did the seafoam in the intake, cleaned the MAF, and fixed my PS leak. I just put new plugs in it on Saturday as well. Has been running awesome! Then, I just drove it from the shop, back to work. I'll take it out after work and see if anything changed. But it seemed really sluggish to me. Changed the power completely.

I found a high flow resonator on MotorsportsWarehouse.com. Does anyone have one of these? Did it change the performance at all? Should I try reseting my ECU and see if that helps?

Redlightining- What is the pleciebo effect?

Re: Resinator

Nah, from what I had explained to me, you need to have an expansion where there was one to begin with. If there was a resenator there before, put an aftermarket one there now or else you will hurt performance. Aftermarket is cheaper so that's what I would go with.

Also, motorsport warehouse is really expensive.. Jus look for aftermarket parts on or partstrain. And a pleciebo effect means it's all in your head..

I'm sorry Freeman but in my fairly vast mechanical experience/knowledge, I have to completely disagree with you.

Well in my fairly vast mechanical experience/knowledge, I have to completely disagree with you.

Freeman is right. The 'Resonator' is a vital piece of the exhaust system. It acts as the expansion area for the gas plug from the cylinder to drop pressure in. It also is an expansion point for the sonic wave to reflect back to the cylinder as a negative pressure. Without it the engine looses a lot of torque.

It should be replaced with a Resonator of the equivalent volume.

Harvey.

Interesting. My car already had the resonator removed when I bought it. Are you saying I would feel a noticable difference if I were have one put on?

Don't know if you will feel the difference, but the engine will.

The easiest way to kill the engine power is to change the front end of the exhaust system. From the resonator back, you can do what ever you want.

May not be apparent, but the standard system is the best you can use, for the standard cams.

Harvey.

Re: Resinator

I've kinda based my exhaust's design around the fact that I'll need to keep air flow where it once was..

See?

Yeah I've got MS Paint skillz..

Great, now I have to build an exhaust system out of Leggo's!
