Is this attached picture an Italian car? No it is not part 2

Hello All,

Hello "anthonybuchanan", please don't take this the wrong way. I want to add that I am glad you did not get your membership killed and are still on the forum. I rather enjoy reading the debates and I do feel they are all in good fun. In the end we are all SVX owners and or have a love for this car.

So here my post.

I own a beautiful 1972 Triumph STAG. We all know Triumph's are a British car just like Jaguar is. There is no debate or question there. They may have design influences from other nations but the mechanicals and under pinnings are British.

So here is some history on Triumph and particularly the STAG model. The Stag body was in no doubt designed by an Italian. He borrowed a 60's 2000 Saloon in the promise that he could design a new appealing model for Triumph to produce. He designed the body but the root was and remained British. Later manufacturing was done in the UK by Triumph.

Open Quote:
"The car started as a styling experiment..., which had also been styled by Michelotti, and loaned to him by Harry Webster, Director of Triumph Engineering... Their agreement was under the premise that if Harry liked the design, Triumph could use the prototype as the basis of a new Triumph model. Harry, who was a long time friend of Giovanni whom he called "Micho", absolutely loved the design and spirited the prototype back to England. ... Triumph liked the Michelotti design so much that they propagated the styling lines of the Stag into the new T2000/T2500 saloon and estate model lines of the 1970's."

Open quote:
"An Italian design consultant called Giovanni Michelotti had created the styling for every Triumph since the 1959 Herald, and the Stag concept - a four-seater convertible using a Triumph 2000 saloon as its basis - was his idea. Michelotti enjoyed a close friendship with Triumph's director of engineering, Harry Webster, and the understanding between them meant the Stag was given an instant green light in 1965."

I know my Triumph was designed by the famous Italian designer but I never consider it an Italian car. Actually in researching this for my post I learned what's written above in the second quote. Michelotti had some hand in all Triumph's from 1959 on. No one I know considers a TR6, TR7 GTV-6 or my Stag to be Italian cars. I often get comments like, "its a Triumph, thats British, but it looks so Italian", and I reply yup its Brit but I understand why you would feel it looks a little Italian as Michelotti designed its body for Triumph. Don't get me wrong, I like the fact and take pride in the fact the Michelotti designed the entire body look of my British car, but its still my British car. Just like I will take pride in the Italian influence of my Japanese SVX. What can be better than the world best car builders teaming up with the world best fashion designers to produce one common product. Imagine a Acura NSX in a Ferrari body. Usable and reliable on a daily basis yet beautiful enough to be a true classic design.

I hope I have not offended anyone and this is just my opinion. I will say my SVX is Japanese but I will have no issue adding in that it has some Italian design influence(s) for its body.

And here is my British Stag.
