Need help with a begginers thing
I wounder if you guys can help me with what looks like a basic thing (did not find any other thread about it)
I needed to change brakerotors on my car, and then I discovered that on my driveshaft the rubberseals are damaged (probebly the wrong name, but look on the picture and se what I mean). So I removed the driveshafts and order new parts, but now and don't know how to remove the gear (big metallthing on the end so I can put on a the new part. Do have to remove the gear in the other end (gearbox end) or am I missing something here?

The joint at the wheel end cannot be removed. My local garage had an easier way. They use a special stretchy rubber boot that can be fitted without removing the joints from the shaft.

There is a spring pin that holds the stub into the axle at the right end of the the photo. Use a 3/16 inch punch to drive it out. When you go to drive it back in, make sure you have it lined up properly. If it is 180* off, the hole will half line up.

Thanks, I will jump to it later this afternoon and hopefully it will be on the road again short after that.

For all that effort - I'd just replace the halfshaft...

SVX parts are very expensive and hard to come by outside of America. In Europe, you can't just go to the nearest breaker and pick up a part. If you try to import parts from America you get stung on shipping and import taxes (but sometimes it still works out cheaper than the local dealer).

oh and the outer joints DO come apart if you whack it hard enough (been there done that) but you have to replace the snap ring that holds it together, so only do it if you have a BIG brass hammer and a new snap ring, but since you're replacing the inner boot anyway, just leave it together. Make sure you get all the old grease out of the joints and pack the new grease in there good :-)
(And make sure you have the boot and such on the outer joint before you put the inner one back together )
