The lower the # gear ratio, the more stress there is on the transmission. The WRX 5 speed has a 3.90 front differential that has a 1.1 step down to use a 3.54 rear differential

A 4.444:1 axle ratio causes the least amount of stress on the tranny and engine because the low ratio means that the tranny/engine have a greater mechanical advantage when it comes to accelerating the vehicle. Higher ratios add more stress to the tranny/engine. The 4.444:1 ring & pinion is the weakest of the ring & pinion gears though because of the small number of teeth on the pinion gear.
