i would first change fuel filter located in the engine bay on drivers side (black canister) around $25. i noticed a difference changing this when i got my ride. do you get check engine codes. if so go get it hooked up to a computer and have them tell you and show u the codes. easy way to find issues with these cars. i just had a bad coil pack and my gas milage blew. same as yours.

It takes a while for the car to know that you are giving it 93 again. I would use 93, and not mix the 89 and 93.

Smile Welcome!

Welcome to the network. I did mention this site to your dad before? Now you know, pple here are so friendly and helpful....

I believe I know who you are based on your first post. Do you live off van voorhis road? Is your SVX blue color? You study at WVU and your dad work for WVU? If all these match, I'm pretty sure I'm right.

For the gas mileages you posted, I don't think it's that bad in Morgantown, in my opinions. This is home of mountaineers, so many hills. I average both of my SVXes 12-14mpg in town, with 93 gas. My engines don't have any problem. No wonder, that's one time I drove your dad's svx, I felt it didn't have so much "zoom" as mine? 89? No-no!

For your acceleration, I ain't sure. Do more search and you will find out more. The very last time (long time) I started the svx for your dad, I remember that was the power 16 blinks code. Do you know you have the tranny cooler installed on your car after the tranny was rebuilt one or two yrs ago?

In my opinions, SVX is a good car if you know how to treat it right. It's more special and unique than others, if you treat it right, it will serve you good. If you go to JohnHoward dealer and get it checked, they might charge you alot. There's one Suby shop in milesground, very nearby JohnHoward, they work on Subarus and some SVXes. Ask around and I am sure you can find them.
If you need more help, let us know.

Take care.

On a full fillup of 13 gallons, I'm getting about 200 miles, and this is in the city and I'm not a very wasteful driver. Especially coming from stops, sometimes the rpms will just go out of control, going up to 4k, but the acceleration will be pretty lousy. We have a toyota previa van, 4 cylinder, and I think that it has better acceleration than my SVX 6 cylinder. Acceleration is fine once the car gets up to speed, but coming from stops it's pretty lousy. So, in short, it's acting like a 4 cylinder car and it's consuming fuel like a 6 cylinder. Any idea what it might be?
Personally I don't think the low octain would do it.

It would appear that the transmision has problems. The reving to 4k on start up, depending what gear it is in at the time, spells either the forward clutch is slipping, or the brake band is slipping. Does the Power light flash on start up?

Harvey.

So I have hit it right on the nail ehh. PM replied to you. I think you should find a place that knows more about this car and work on it.

Would the ECU learn faster if it was reset by pulling the battery cable?

Two words: Bad Transmission

This is exactly what my 94 did. It's slipping. Eventually you'll lose a gear or two, and then it will crap out altogether. And stop being cheap with the gas!!

I gotta tell y'all, I fill-up with 93 octane and top-off at 1/2 (89 octane) to 3/4 tank (87), and I drive my SVX daily and keep comprehensive fuel consumption records, and there's no difference in fuel economy that would be measurable outside a laboratory setting, since when I ran straight premium.

The perception that premium fuel is somehow "better" is simply wrong. It's just higher in octane. It's foolish to spend more on 93 octane when the car will run beautifully on a mix that approximates 91. Those two extra octane points are money out the tailpipe.

I agree. As long as you have at least 91 octane you're fine.

O2 sensors

If you decide to replace the O2 sensors, do a Google search, I found Bosch sensors for a lot less than $100 per. The difference in performance is quite noticable. Changing O2 sensors is a basic procedure, the tuff part for me was disconecting the wire conection.
