Lash adjuster
Is the lash adjuster something that can be replaced without pulling the engine? How hard is this job? I've got a bad tick.... I tried pouring liquid Prozac in the tank, but the tick remains.

The lifters are hydraulic, so no lash adjustment. You could try some oil detergents.

No try an engine flush first...I know at valvoline its $15 with an oil change...basically they are dumping in something that smells like kerosenne in let the engine run for 5 mins and then change oil.

Try a heavy dose of MMO. Older Sooby engines love it. Ben has had good success with something called "Valve Medic"

I think I'm going to give that engine flush a try. I've tried the Valve Medic, which quietens down, but it doesn't seem to last too long. I have no idea what mmo is..

adjusters can be changed w/out removing engine but ...
On my Sub's the best thing to kill the lash adjuster tic is Risilone (yellow quart bottle). I added a quart at every oil change for 40,000 miles before I changed the VLA's (lifters, cam followers, etc). I also found that 10w30 works best in winter and straight 30w in summer.
To remove the lash adjusters you have to remove the timing belt, cam shafts, rear timing cover, valve covers. It's not a difficult job just time consuming and I'm sure a real pain considering the clearance around the valve covers/cam towers. Try the MMO and Risilone first (not at the same time). |

This worked! I had an extremely bad tick on the driver's side. I could hear it with all windows rolled up and a greyhound bus next to me. I did the flush, and it was like a miracle. Evangelistic preachers tried to get my car in their show, the difference was so great. If you have a bad tick. Do this first. But it wasn't $15. It was $49.95. Along with the synth. oil, I spent $110 on an oil change. But it was better than over a thousand for a lifter job with the same results.
