Earl,
We have a 98 Outback also, has the 2.5 and around 117k on it now, with no head gasket issues (knocking on wood) runs good (for a 2.5 na in a bigger platform) but wish mine was a manual like yours

I pull my bike trailor with 2 street bikes with it sometimes, and it does alright.

It sure drives nice. It has lots of pep with the 5 speed. Sounds like we are about the same mileage. Mine has 116,100 right now.

Does that clean the rear window? Are they easy to install and would you recommend one?

It does help to keep the window clean...

I actually bought one of the over stock ones for the 2000 - 2004 Legacy, as they have some colors that they are clearancing for around $65, and since I was painting it anyway it have to be ground a little to mate up right on the older model, but at that price I wasn't complaining.

Yes, I'd recommend it.

I found one for $62 for the 98. I think I will pick it up. How do they mount? Are the holes already there, or do you have to drill new ones? I haven't looked at it yet.

One other thing you may be able to answer. At night, the only thing that is not lit up on the controls is the heater/AC controls. That is all dark. Is there a light behind there that is burnt out?

On the Spoiler, you have to drill holes, but there are flat spots already there to locate them (I think you have to pull 2 rubber stoppers for access to 2 of the holes)

And yes, there is a light burnt out in the AC controls....Every used 95-1999 Legacy I've seen it's burnt out....there is a good write up on changing them out over at Legacy Board I remember it not being to bad, but the write up cleared up some of the questions I had about it.

So VERY common on these. You'll need three bulbs: one #72351AC051, and two #72351AC061. Not a tough job to do.

Start by pulling the cup holder out to the fully extended position. Remove the two screws on either side. This will let you remove the cupholder and some of the trim also. To remove the air vents you'll need to reach behind them and unplug the hazard switch harness. With all the trim removed you'll see two screws on either side of the AC control panel. Remove those and pull the panel out as far as you can. Reach behind and unplug the two wiring harnesses. Some people disconnect the heater control cable, but I've done it with it still attached. The old bulbs come out with a slight twist from a small screwdriver, the new ones go in the same way. The larger bulb (AC051) goes behind the fan speed switch.

Thanks Dave and Huck.

That will really help. I have already had the cup holder out because it was so gummed up with old coffee etc and it would not even extend all of the way out. I pulled it out and gave it a bath in hot soapy water and it works like it is new. The bulbs will be next. There is a right brake light out too. Just a few little things to get done.

my aunt has the same car with a little under 100,000. the last time i drove it it had a little valve tap that was solved by useing higher test fuel. do regular maintence and it wont let you down. most of all keep that timing belt in check, my sister just destroied the 95 legacy by not geting the timing fixed when it needed to, the belt broke and f'd up the engine. it was a good car till she got it, stupid B****!

The 95 EJ22 is a non interferance engine, breaking the t-belt shouldn't have hurt the motor...

odd isn't it. thats why i had the caviot of "stupid B****" she managed to distr0y the can in a way that it cant. amazing. needless to say im preaty p.o.'d about it as it was origionaly my car and it was given to her for college in frostburg (snow). now im out one car so when the svx breaks (and it does oftin) i have to gimp it to class>

but like i said if you keep on top of maintence you shouldnt have any problems.

Got the left fog light fixed as well as the lights behind the heat/AC controls. I went into the Subie Dealership and got the parts. I asked the price for the fog light and she said that it was $125. I said that I would wait on that one. She asked "you aren't over 60 are you?" I said not. She asked "Did you buy it here?" I said no. She said that she was trying to save me some money. I thanked her and said that I had 8 SVXes as well as the Outback. She said "Oh, I will give you a wholesale price then!" I thanked her and paid with a Big smile on my face. I saved around $35 for all of the parts.
