The quake that hit Alaska was kind of the same. The water level dropped and you could walk over a mile out to where the ocean used to be. They interviewed a lady who survived the Alaska quake on the History Channel some time ago and they said the water was gone for over an hour, then it came back over 40 feet high. How long was the gap in SE Asia? If the water left suddenly, that's a clue to leave. They had a woman quoted on AOL just after it happened that said all the people watched the water leave and hung around. She was lucky and survivied.

60,000,

The quake happened in a area that is surounded by Islands close by, so many places have been hit. The wave reached Africa, we are fortunate that the Islands protected us in Australia from the main swell. There are many Aussie in the area on holidays, 8 dead 8 missing so far.

Aus. has been sending plane loads of supplies and personal since Monday, mobile hospitals and workers. There are just so many bodies, disease must follow.

Sad times.
Harvey.

I read something that said the waves travel at over 500 MPH until they get to shore, then they slow down and increase in height when they get to shallower water.

Imagine just a 1 foot wave hitting your boat at 500 MPH.....that could definitely make for a bad day.

looks like the total will reach 6 figures, and could double if disease takes hold

Like I said, horrible.

Yes, it's sad some would think of it as "cleansing" or so I've heard from heartless people on Gaia.

I finally heard from my friend in Malaysia last night. He was on the island of Penang when it happened. He and his family are OK. The were up on one of the tallest dunes when it hit.
