Shuddering when TC locks up

Everytime the TC locks up above 50mph, i feel a shuddering/vibration in the car. This happens only when the rpms are dropping while the transmission goes from 4th to TC lockup. Once the rpms have stabilized, there is no more vibration/shuddering. I do not notice this on any other shifts (up or down).
I don't know if this is related in anyway, but i recently changed the high pressure hose for the power steering. I started noticing the vibration/shuddering after the change.

I've done a few searches through the forums but couldn't find anything related.

Thanks
RB

Huh... How coincidental! I also have a 94 FWD Barcelona Red SVX with about 142k on the odo. Cool!

Anyway, mine does the same thing when the TC locks up. You won't feel the shudder any other time because it is the actual locking/unlocking process that causes the shudder, and the TC only locks in 4th.

Mine only does it when in the 48 - 55 mph range, when in 4th gear, and when I press or release the accelerator. This also only happens when the car is warm.

My car has been doing it since I bought it (Aug. 03), and so far there are no ill effects. I'm pretty used to the shudder feeling, but if it starts bothering you... Just put the selector into 3rd. In the 45 - 55 mph range this will only raise your RPMs by a few hundred. Most members here will actually suggest that you keep the selector in 3rd up until 80 kph, which is about 50 mph.

As I recall the TC will lock in 3rd if the conditions are right.

I don't think that's correct.

If the car is shuddering when the TC locks, it might be a torn rear tranny mount. I think its pretty easy to see if you can get under the car.

That might be why I get a little shudder on 1st to 2nd upshifts/downshifts. Any idea on the location of the rear mount (what it's near, etc)? I've never looked at it before, and would love to fix it.

I think that if your SVX (USDM) does this it's the only one.

Its the rubber mount that holds up the rear of the tranny. It sits between a cross plate attached to the body and the tranny. Its been a while since I had a 4EAT in my car, so I can't remember how easy the mount is to see. I do know that it is common for these mounts to eventually partially tear. The one on my 4EAT was actually in decent condition, and the guy who bought my tranny was happy because his was pretty well torn.

Is it something that a DYI mechanic could fix, or kinda shop-only?

The tranny mount can be done in a garage on jack stands. I have done it. The exhaust has to come down.

I personally don't think it's the tranny mount causing this. If it was then it wouldn't matter which gear you are in.

You mention this starting shortly after replacing the high pressure power steering hose...did you check your steering fluid level?

Where do you feel the shuddering? In the steering wheel or in your butt?

Power steering level looks fine. The vibration is in the buh-tox almost like the whole car shakes.

It must be because I remember making a thread about this earlier in the year and someone verified the TC will lock in 3rd.

I'll find out for sure tonight. If so I have the camcorder.
