Question on Alternator Belt Replacement and Power Steering Belt Replacement

I am replacing both the power steering pump belt (it failed last week) and the alternator belt. I just wanted to double check and make sure there was nothing special I had to do before I did this. Last time I took out one of the fans and loosened a nut for the tensioner if I recall but I want to double check to prevent any headaches.

Re: Question on Alternator Belt Replacement and Power Steering Belt Replacement

The steering pump and the alternator both use the same belt. The second belt is for the AC.

For the PS/Alt use a 12mm wrench to loosen the nut on the face of the idler pulley, then use a stubby ratcheting 12mm wrench or a 12mm socket on the end of a long extension to loosen the tensioner nut.

For the AC, use a 12mm wrench to loosen to clamping nuts (one in the center and one on the curved slot. Then use a 17mm (Maybe 19mm) to swing the idler out of the way.

Re: Question on Alternator Belt Replacement and Power Steering Belt Replacement

Thanks for the help, I now have a problem, I have tried to loosen the nut on the curved slot for the AC belt but it is stripped. Any suggestions? I have a nut splitter, and the tools for the stripped nuts but nothing seems to work. When I first put the wrench on there I twisted it once and the whole nut warped and became mangled and is now a round shinny piece of aluminum.

Re: Question on Alternator Belt Replacement and Power Steering Belt Replacement

Check out the How-To Docs to see if you are doing it right. The nut should not be Aluminum, but steel. Pictures help out alot and they are on the instructions. I hope this helps.

Re: Question on Alternator Belt Replacement and Power Steering Belt Replacement

Thanks, I had looked at the docs earlier, the only problem was the nut. I got it off, it is completely trashed. Thanks for the help though.
