The best ATX fluid

I just bought my SVX and want to change all the fluids I can. I changed the oil yesterday with Mobil One 10W30, and a new fram oil and air filter. What is the best ATX fluid I can buy? I'm guessing its mobil one synthetic, but what kind?

I and a fair amount of others use Mobil 1 (about $5 a bottle). I've started changing mine every oil change as its not real hard and is only about $20 more. In the winter I'll probably do it every other oil change. Some others talk highly of Redline sythetics usually about $10 a bottle. Subaru makes their own ATF Dex 3 that they claim contains "important additives". Its about $4 depending on your dealer. I really don't think there is too much difference in the BRAND NAME fluids as long as you keep them from getting fried. They all have slightly different burn temps but fairly consistant. You'll want a tranny cooler and gauge. Get the gauge first so you can see the improvements. Subaru also has a service bull. out on fluids. Couldn't find the link and its time for me to leave soon. Basically it says you want to try to find a fluid with a -40 degree cel flow rate of 20,000 or less. There's a name for this standard test but I can't remember it.

Where can I get a trans guage? And how do you mount the sensor? I don't have to drill a hole in the case do I? :\

Thanks in advance,

If you get a Perma-Cool canister typ AT filter kit (#10678) it has a hole already in the mount for a sensor. I bought a Dakota Digital temp gauge (I will give you the link) and it mounts by pushing down between the post and dash. I have a picture in my locker if you want to see what it looks like. Others have got cheaper ones and some have mounted them in their ash trays or where the coin holder is.

The filter is $38.00 from:

Both are very easy to install. Good luck.

Lightbulb oils..oils..oils..

uhm.. oils are not 'fairly consistant' and definatelly there is difference among oils. To my knowledge Amsoil and Redline are top oils. I use Mobil 1 because is widelly available.

In my 96 civic i use Mobil 1 5-30 and it overheatedf once do to a hole in the radiator temp needle was at all the way up in teh red zone and couldnt go any higher i realized this once i got home. After a year and half and new radiator engien still runing strong like nothing.

Motorcycle experience, waterpup failure while using mobil 1 20-50. Several times reached the red zone until i got a new pup.

Try thinking of the same experience with a regular oil.

If still in doubt resear how lubricants are made with diff brands and they use diff techniques towards the same goal.

For the SVX tranny i would deffinatelly choose a lubricant that will flow the best and that has a high temp tolerance.

I have doen my research on oils and this is my $0.02
(probably worth less than that)

Ok, so right now my transmission is STOCK (except its rebuilt)... so in order to make it last, I need a few things:

1. Transmission Cooler
2. Transmission filter
3. Transmission temperature guage.

Anyone have a website about doing all this? I've worked with engines quite a bit but I've never had an ATX before in any of my cars (wait I guess one did) so they're pretty much a mystery to me. >shrug<

I'm guessing he means automatic transmission.

A= auto
TX= transmission

Just a guess...he may be a CS or CE student. :P
