Question Help with thermostat, stat!

Today I removed my radiator and cleaned out the fins on my. Tomorrow I'm going to do a chemical flush of the thing. After the flush I'll fill it up with nice clean fluid. Before I refill it and get on the road to MI, I'd like to change my thermostat.

How do I change the thermostat (a how to, please)? Does it require removing timing belt cover? Anybody have a part #? Are they easy to find/common? Thanks in advance.

-Mat

EZ job Mat

The lower radiator hose enters the engine at a housing with two bolts. After you've drained the radiator, remove those two bolts and there is the t-stat. Get a Subaru part as parts store varieties are often incorrect. Also get the gasket. The t-stat will have a small floating pin in the flange above the stopper. This pin has to be located above the stopper when you put the t-stat in. Clean the lip on the housing that the gasket sits in, install the t-stat (confirm that the t-sta is installed in the direction of flow, it is marked) and bolt it back in with the two bolts. Re-connect the radiator hose and re-fill the system with coolant.

Nice how-to. When I replaced my thermostat it actually came with a gasket. Now I have an extra.

yup yup

Be back in MI on the 5th, but I'll be busy with school stuff until at least that 12th. Possibly the first 2 weeks I'll just be swamped. A meet would be cool. We'll have 3 coming from KU, yourself, and a few from the detroit area possibly? Maybe we can just hang out with the i-club guys.
