Question Paint/Buffer Speed

The paint on my girlfriend's car, as well as my hood, could use a little buffing/polishing, but unfortunately I can't afford a nice adjustable speed orbital buffer. The two models I have seen that I am concidering each have set speeds. One is a smaller and can be held in one hand, this one has a speed of 4000 opm. The other one is larger and meant to be used with two hands, this one has a speed of 2300 opm. Does anyone know anything about what buffer speeds are good for what purposes?

I am not familar with the best speed for buffing but I have made a variable speed controler. I use this with the belt sander, drill and dremel tool. I used one of those rotory fan control switches and wired it together inside two metal outlet boxes, one for the switch and one for the outlet. I have been using it for years now and it seems to work just fine other than it gets a little hot. A slow speed belt sander is awesome for removing paint or poly. It dosen't get hot enough to melt and stick to the belt.

I think that if you have a faster speed buffer you have to move it faster so that you don't melt the clear coat.

the random orbit polisher I've seen most recommended is the Porter Cable brand, and the 7424 model has a variable speed from 2400 to 6000rpm.
