hood lifters (again)

ok, i have my *new* hood lifter gas struts, which did not come with the ball fitting that screws into the hood. i did a search of old posts and found this from ensteele93:

"I put the bolt from the hood into a vice (holding it with the nut part so I would not mess up the threads), and hit the stay with a punch and hammer which drove it off of the ball bolt. I then used a rubber hammer to lightly tap the stay onto the ball again, and it was ready to be mounted onto the hood and fender of the car."

everyone agree? or is there any other wisdom out there on how to get the old ones off the ball fitting and the new ones on? any experience or instructive advice appreciated.

Now I know Earl's secret of having 4 (yes kiddies I said 4) SVXes.

He puts the nuts in a vice then raps on the balls gently with a rubber hammer.

Boy, they sure do some kinky stuff on the left coast !!!

i suspected that with as many of these as i've seen traded here & on ebay, there would have been more descriptions of the process, so i thought i'd take advantage of those experiences. but apparently everyone else has just bought 'em and you're the only one who has installed 'em!

I was quite surprised when I bought my new ones too. They did not come with the bolts in the ends like I thought they would. You got new ones, so that is why you are in that situation.

Used ones usually have the bolts because there is no reason to pull them out. Most people put on good used ones, so there aren't may who run into this problem.

It is easier than you think to change them. Just put the threaded part of the bolt in a vice with a paper towel or rag wrapped around the threaded part of the bolt and tap the strut with a hammer or a rubber hammer. Then after you get it out, leave it in the vice and gently tap the strut onto the rounded part of the bolt. You are now back in business.

Let me know if you need any more help. If you still can't get it, I could do it for you when you came up to the meet in a couple of weeks at the tulip festivel. No problem. I have all of the tools and it would only take 15 to 20 min max. I live only about 6 miles from where the meet is, and you could do it before or after the meet. That is an offer you can hardly pass on.

I had to hacksaw my old ones off the ball on the old lifters. I would really second think if I had to hit them with a hammer.

Yes, they come off very easy with a BFH. With that it only takes a little tap. It works fine if you follow my directions.

Earl,
I'm just guessing here, but I think it's possible that the original struts have a permanently installed ball whereas the replacements are removable. I tried to remove a couple and tried every tool in the shop, BFH, 30 ton press, etc. and they refused to come off without cutting. Incidently, we have a kit to replace those struts with some less expensive units that work well.

Maybe all of the ones that I have replaced are the replacement struts. Do you have both the hood and trunk struts? Thanks for the info.

Please give some details on the struts - checked your website but didn't find anything about them. I'm very interested in losing the piece of wood I use to hold the wife's hood open.

Geeeez!! This is my first visit to this thread and I can't tell you it pains me to consider giving the nuts/balls a 'love tap' with a BFH! (just be careful not to puncture the cylinder -extremely high pressure gas inside - protect your eyes and anything else you treasure)

I've got a number of vices, but none that grip anything (or at least none that will admit to it.) I do have a couple of vises that are more than happy to crush most anything. (Just picking up Mikey's slack, seeing how he's probably away from his computer. )

Me too...although in the interest of keeeping weight down on the SVX, I changed out the 2X4 for a piece of 1/2" PVC pipe.
