I have built PCs for myself, governments, and NGOs. I have also put together a PowerPC before as well. I have also taken apart many other computer related toys (PDAs). All I can say is this: Macs have a way of putting things together like there is no tomorrow. I mean that is a good thing. I have open many Macs in my life and they are easy to open, easy to upgrade (not much options though) and easy to jump on when things don't work. I have tossed out a pentium 133 out of my window once as well. But when it comes to building and putting things together in a small space, I have to give it for the Macs. PC104s are not included in this discussion at all.
Good night.

Anyway, 28.8 modems had just come out and I got a couple of external units. The Unix boxes were working in minutes. The PC was a pain and took a little over an hour to get it working. The MAC took most of a day. My point is Mac's work great for things designed with Apple control/coordination, poorly if at all otherwise. Windows boxes work (with more effort) as long as the vendor has done a little brown-nosing with MS. *nix is it if you really want to play. Seraph, can you confirm - I understand Sun and others no longer provide the tools to do custom kernel compiles, if true, that's sad - that's the kind of tinkering i miss. |

The year is 2020. John Doe & others who were "solidified" cyrogenically in the '70s have been thawed & are now playing catch-up. They are led to the "History Lab" & plugged into this thread. All of them ask for a little more dri-ice. This is how I feel sometimes.
Ron. (Where's my Atari?) PS - Another thought crossed my "mind". What if ants are space aliens?

Hey Lwin, do you know anything about Northwood (Intel OEM) processors? I'm putting together a pc for my father and Northwood processors are about $50 cheaper than genuine Intels. I want to save money, but don't know if there's any downsides to going OEM.
And Pete, try this link: http://discussions.virtualdr.com Last edited by DavieGravy; 01-12-2003 at 11:26 PM. |

This is totally OT from SVX but on topic on the current topic
I believe it is true that Sun no longer provide tools to do custom compiling for their solaris kernel. Kind of sad. I have not touch a solaris machine for a while now. Kind of miss it. You can still compile your own kernel with linux though. Why I love linux. I myself run a Linux box(mandrake -- perhaps I should install solaris again), WinXP, OSX on my 533mhz PowerPC that I built pretty much from parts, and 3 PDAs (HPC Pro, PPC2k2 on 2 machines and one of them is a small web server). I can run linux on my DreamCast and make that an unhackable webserver too.
As for the Northwood processors, I have not read up on those yet. Last time I built a machine was about 2 months ago for a friend and I am a big sucker for AMD chips since compare to Intel chips, they are a lot cheaper IMO. Last time I bought Intel processors were a pair of Pentium II 400s and those are being used in Ministry of Justic in Bosnia for their webserver/database server. No I lied. I got a Intel StrongArm 206Mhz and Intel XScale 400 Machines sitting infront of me. Sorry. Should stop being a geek. L

Ataries were good machines. So were the Apple IIes. I still think current Macintoshes have the best shells outside.
There is only one other case that is better than the Mac cases it was a cube case I saw once. I never seen it again. It stood on it's one corner and it's only 1 cubic foot in space. I want that case. L

I just bought a Hitachi Handheld PC Pro HPW-600ET for 100 for the car. My Toshiba Maestro idea fell through and there is no way I am ripping up my $500 genio 550g PDA to put in the car. Well Maestro was worth 300ish and it currently is functional but in pieces. Hehe...
I told people R&D cost money. As for your car, I can give you ideas when I see you. I only want to give people idea and get parts for people. I hate to rip people's SVXes apart. I can rip mine apart. I had 3 in the last 2 years and I have done it a million times. Just don't feel comfy ripping through other SVXes yet. L

And Boards that support AMD processors (Socket A) won't take the new PC1066 RDRAM (smokes DDR). And I highly doubt that a 2.4 GHZ Intel processor with 512k of chache supporting a 533 MHZ FSB will be the bottleneck on this new system. I'd like to take into account all those other things that affect system performance. Show me a better socket A board than the Asus p4t533 socket 478. Not going to happen. As for the memory, unless you are a gamer, you don't need all the newest RAM technology. I know Quake III is pretty old. I still beat a ton of people in my old duron 900mhz with PC133 512MB RAM. Just a thought. L
