Air Filter Install Help?
I have seen a couple of nice conical K&N Air Filters attached on some SVX's. Are they custom or can I buy a kit...? Either way, can somebody help me get one in there? Please!? Details or links would be appreciated. They look awesome and I hope it is as easy as it looks.

Air filter
You can buy a K&N filter from http://www.subaruparts.com, I believe its about $50, but I believe you are looking for a cold air intake (I don't know who makes one for the SVX). I would check this site though before you buy one, it describes how the filter will actually reduce performance http://my.voyager.net/~tmclane/index.html but if you do put it in it should be easy to do, it just goes right on. My friend put an air intake on his truck with no problem, the filter/intake should have instructions with it to install it.

With my drop in K&N I did not notice any performance difference. Some people have also mentioned that the oil from these filters coats the MAF sensor wire causing less than ideal idle.
Make sure that whatever changes you make can be completely undone. I personally wouldn't try to find an intake to fit but maybe put the money saved by not getting one towards a 5spd conversion.

I have had drop-in K&N filter cartridges in my '97 SVX LSi and my '97 Outback wagon with the 2.5L , 4 cyl. engine for about 2.5 years.
I have not noticed any difference in the SVX. The engine in the Outback revs quicker and runs slightly cooler judging from the needle position on the dash mounted temp. gage. That's it.

So the consensus is that drop in filters make no diffrence...but what about the conical air filters you can micky mouse into the fender well? That's what I might buy. Maybe pipe it in with abs...or silicone tubing?

If you use a conical filte, make sure that it sucks in cold outside air, not hot underhood air.
If you go through all the work of doing this, the job is only half done. Next, you must modify the exhaust system to drop flow restrictions on the exhaust side of the engine. It never ends, does it !!

What exhaust modifactions...? WHat do you mean by dropping airflow restrictions? I understand the concept but not how to go about it. Clarification would be greatly appreciated.
