Maintainance and engine shape up
So...
The exterior and interior I can handle. However, the timing belt should be changed this year seeing it happened in 2007. I know the answers are to be found around the forum but I'm overloaded with a wealth of information and need short lists, sorry. * When changing the timing belt, what should I have the mechanic do at the same time? The waterpump perhaps and... ? * If I want the engine to be in tip top shape and yield the promised power, what should I consider in terms of parts change, etc? * Should something else be replaced / inspected? The AWD was repaired in december, the climate is so cold here I doubt a 96 transmission needs additional cooling? Best Regards and thanks.

Water pump - YES YES YES (mine siezed 2 weeks later - subaru paid for another new timing belt & labour, as they had not suggested doing it at initial time).

I just did a timing belt and water pump on my recently acquired '92 with 143K on the clock. No signs that either needed to be done. The main reason for me getting into the timing case was oil leaks-- I replaced both cam seals, intake cam plugs, oil pump (crank) seal, and resealed the oil pump to the block with new o-ring. I also replaced all the idler pulleys while in there with new ones (I went with the PCI timing belt kit that included all 4 idlers plus tensioner pulley).
I would personally recommend all of these be accomplished with a timing belt change, because you've already done (or paid for) all the labor to get in there-- best to do it once. |

Very Optional (but I replaced these with new OEM Subaru because I'm weird): Both rear timing covers (I'm sure yours will break upon removal of front covers) All timing cover gaskets (I think there were 4 total, one for each of the rear covers and two on the center front cover) Upper and lower radiator hoses (since coolant was drained to remove radiator for access anyway...) ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY REQUIRED: Lots of beer. |

Wow, this is golden!
Anything else in general I should do? The car's been through all services and has fairly new spark plugs, rear bearings and rotors changed a few years ago.

Don't forget the gaskets that go around each bolt in the valve cover to keep the oil in.
13271AA051 Washer Rocker Cover $2.84 each. I can't remember if you need 16 or 20. It's okay to reuse the bolts. .
