Re: Exhaust rotting away...

if you want to keep the heat shields (they are there for a reason) then drill a small hole in the heat shield and thread a screw into it until the end of the screw contacts the pipe behind it. this will hold the shield still and stop the noise.

Re: Exhaust rotting away...

Yeah, due to the tough inspection requirements of New York, I'm definitely doing to keep the heat shields in place. I'll probably try to solve the rattling by finding where the crack in the heat shield is, and filling it with JB Weld, but if I can't find the crack, I will probably try the drilled idea that 92snowmachine proposed.

When it comes to my exhaust, I'm going to go to a local shop or two, and see what they think my best options are, now that I'm better informed and I know what I'm looking for. I just want to make sure what I do will allow me to pass inspection, and to keep driving this car as long as everyone else!

I hope to go against the stigma that is against my generation and the SVX; only wanting them for the V6s and the "funky windows!" It truly is a driver's car, and despite being young and inexperienced, I know that there are a lot of things that are incredibly special about it. That's why my uncle loved it so much, and why I passed up on the Audi that my father was saving for me when the chance to own a family heirloom came up!

I'll bump this thread if I have any developments, or further questions. Thanks everyone for your help thus far!

Re: Exhaust rotting away...

JB weld will not hold. I had mine welded 3 times before I finally removed them .

I got sick of it, and well, fixed it.... and on a limited budget so much more tourqe!

I dont know if it changed the sound, but it can be done for less than 200 bucks.

it sounds very good, and is extremely quiet, no kittens, just the one resonator,

if ya cant do it yourself find a decent local exhaust shop they should be able to help out cheap

edit, my car is a 92, with no OBD IF you have a post stream o2 sensor ( i dont know if the obd2 cars had them,) this is an o2 sensor behind the cats you will throw codes,
my car had the two infront to control fuel mixture, keepin it simple, people have made some boxes to mimic the signals, to keep the light off and trick the car to running, we had to
do this when we converted a 2.5 liter cougar to a 3.0 and made it a monster=)

also, my car is "off road use only" lol. and would never pass emissions testing, thankfully, michigan and the motor city dosnt care!
NO!
Do not do what he did!
It is illegal first or all.
A Magnaflow 94007 is a much better route!

Re: Exhaust rotting away...

for the record I have a 92 with straight pipes to the main catalytic converter. The straight pipes had o2 sensor bungs welded in and I have NOT thrown a code or received a check engine light yet. I will be installing the magnaflow converters referenced by SVXfiles however due to the increased/obnoxious exhaust note caused by the straight pipes.

Re: Exhaust rotting away...

illegal? off road use only! cars my trail runner

Did not know that magnaflow exsisted.... that would have been alot simpler of a fix, the ones i seen had an odd angle for in when i checked them at the local parts store,
to me it would have put the pipes in at a 45degree angle, and I didnt really see that working, I need to do more research

maybe ill order one, and cut the pipes back and reweld it in

And here is the rest of the system. We decided to mount the 3rd O2 sensor (OBDII) directly behind the cat to get a cleaner emissions reading and to make replacement of the sensor easier. Flows into the AeroTurbine AR25 resonator.

You can use the AR20 resonators as pre-cats in the OBDI cars.

The OBDII cars are more emissions-sensitive and require true pre-cats to keep from throwing a code. We replaced them with small Magnaflow cats on my 96. No problems since.

Re: Exhaust rotting away...

very clean, what is all the way in the back(muffler?) I see another resonator?

looks better than the setup that I hand crafted,

the resonators just effect the sound correct?
