You may want to consider swapping in a '95- '98 EJ22. They're easier to find, generally more reliable, and don't have the head gasket issues that the EJ25's have. The difference in power is considered negligible by people that have driven both. If you get a '95 EJ22, it's a straight swap. If you get a later one, you'll also need the exhaust y-pipe to go with it, but it bolts into your existing exhaust at the cat. converter. Also, the '95- '96 EJ22's are non-interference so if you bust a timing belt you don't destroy the engine. I've done a couple of these, including one into a '97 GT, and they really are a direct swap. Thanks Dave. Is the EJ22 ECU a required part of the swap, or do you stick with the EJ25D ECU?

No ECU change is required-- all the electronics and connectors are 'plug & play' for either engine. There are two issues in the swap:
-The exhaust Y-pipe that I mentioned: '95 EJ22 is dual-port exhaust like the EJ25 so no y-pipe is required. '96 to '98 EJ22s are single-port exhaust and so you'll need the EJ22 Y-pipe which connects into the existing exhaust. -Sometimes there are minor variations in vacuum hose arrangements depending on the year of the car and whether it has CA or 49-state emissions. On later cars the charcoal canister is in the back of the car next to the gas tank, on earlier cars, it's under the hood on the passenger side near the radiator. These connections are easy to figure out, especially if you have the emissions diagram on the underside of the hood of the donor car. In my experience EJ22's are MUCH more plentiful and usually sell for 1/3 to 1/2 the price of an EJ25 (OR LESS.) You can't use a pre-'95 EJ22 or a '99 or later EJ22 without fairly major modifications though. |
