Why when “Subaru SVX forums” is recorded as a googly search, does Subaru SVX World Forums appear at the top of page one, then again on pages two, three and eight, at which point I again gave up without discovering any lead to this site.

It does not take much brain power, to understand why the opposition has advanced so quickly.

Yes, I am a nasty thorn in your foot.

I just searched subaru svx and the network is about the 4th link after

1. "image results for subaru svx"

2. www.subarusvx.com

3. wikipedia's entry

4. subaru-svx.net

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&s...=f&oq=&aqi=g10

and I typed in "subaru svx forum" and subaru-svx.net comes up first... Maybe Google searches differently when used from different countries...

SubaruSVX.com comes up top of the list, on my Mac as well, but our site is “The Subaru SVX World Network”

Re: Please no more

It's a shame how threads like this so often degenerate into squabbles. Not to speak for others, but to distill this all back to the original point:

Don't send unsolicited personal messages seeking advice from members. (This is simple, common courtesy, folks.) Search the forums for an answer to your questions. If you cannot find a satisfactory answer, post your question or problem in the appropriate forum.

Not all advice found here (or anywhere else) will be on the money, but most is good stuff from knowledgeable contributors. Even dissenting opinions can be of value in deciding how to approach a problem. If you disagree with advice offered, state your case and let it go.

(You guys who get swamped with PMs should come up with a way to charge for your services).

Re: Please no more

I have been back through this complete thread and I can not see where there has been a squabble. Misplaced humour, messy posts, rather complicated opinions, but a message has been recorded and driven home. Surely members can speak their mind, so that a point can be sorted, without being accused of squabbling.

Re: Please no more

I hereby propose that we give Young Tom a raise...

...in the amount of PMs he is allowed to have...

... to 1500!!

I wonder if that could fill up in a month?

i've gotten these PM's, and i've also sent them. i don't consider it a lack of common courtesy.

i'm not sure how you would deal with large volumes of PM's, however.

Okay, to clarify for wise guys: It's discourteous to impose on others by sending them "help me!" PMs when a search or new post would suffice.

Re: Please no more

I wasn't singling anyone out. I was just offering some thoughts on why the PMs have become almost a substitute for a proper thread. No need for anyone to get upset. The only reason I point out what I do is to say I've been around a long time, like others, and these are the things I see happening that didn't used to happen. I often suggest to people to email me privately to discuss the repair on their SVX as opposed to starting a thread, as I tire of suggesting a repair which is intended to restore the car to a factory condition but yet the thread will get marred with posts like "oh you don't have to do all that, I did this other thing and it worked great on my '89 buick! This is a practice I intend to stop immediatly. However, I think there is much room for improvement in the way things are arranged on here. Just one example: The technical forums need to be split up better, as in having a place for questions relating to repairs of various parts of the car. For example, one could be created that said "SVX Zexel climate control diagnosis and repair" and could contain a sticky that instructed how to perform the self diagnostic and that the member should do this before posting in that forum. I would be more than happy to author that sticky in a collaborative effort with some people who were well versed in a/c repair and diagnosis and/or this system in particular so that we could help our fellow members who lack this knowledge get up to speed instead of asking the same questions over and over.

For example

Member opens tech q&a forum

Member sees more forums relating to specific part of the car (i.e engine, trans, electrical, a/c, etc)

Member opens A/C tab

Member reads:

"Things to know before posting in this forum"

Member reads a sticky that says:

(Brief explanation of the system)

(how to perform diagnostic)

(Diagnostic codes and their meaning)

(what info to have before posting)

And the member would already know if they had a code, what code they had, and what it meant before posting. Perhaps the member had code 13. They could then browse that forum until they found an existing post about code 13, and perhaps their question is answered with NO pms, NO reposts.

I don't believe anyone's complaining about occasional discourse.

Re: Please no more

The other thing I do not get about this network... is why is there even a restiction on PMs? What is it like... 1990s?

PMs are usually restricted in amount of text and attachment size... at least that is the way everywhere else... only vbulletin engine does it... and imo its lame.

Restricting amount of PMs is just like if you restricted amount of threads in a given forum... SILLY.

Re: Please no more

Since nobody wants to go to the IRC chat...and Tom is usually in there...Something that may be a big help is a live messenger attached to the side of the network homepage...where anyone logged in can type stuff.

it wont completely stop the flow of pmS but if someone has an urgent question they need answered immediatly they could post it up in the message box.

It works pretty well on the montecarloss.com forums

I don't know about some people but I can't make the chat work for crap on my computer (and I sure can't do that at work). this is not a viable solution.
