GPSs that DO work on dash of SVX

I know many have noted various devices that don't work or don't work well on the dash of the SVX due to the titanium-dioxide coated windshield.

Last week, I got an awesome deal on a Garmin GPS that was top of the line a few years ago that is now commonly found at discount sites and Ebay as refurbished loaded with 2008 maps. I bought it mostly for use in my truck as I knew it would not work in the SVX, but it also has an external antenna jack with the antenna option being only $28. So I was pleased with the idea of having one GPS I could use with little cost in both vehicles. The other night I placed it in the SVX expecting to see no working signal and was pleasantly surprised when it became ready to navigate in about 30 second. I have two other GPSs as well that neither work a bit on the dash of the SVX to you can imagine how I was in shock at this outcome.

Needless to say, I give the unit a full thumbs up. I will post model information below. I invite other GPS owners to add to this thread if they have one or know of one that also works without adding the obvious external antenna.

Model information:
  • Garmin StreetPilot 2720
  • 750-800 megs of storage flash
  • mutliple text to speech voices to choose from
  • Mapsource upgradable (TOPO as well for off road adventures)
  • FAST location and POI searches
  • 4.3 inch widescreen toutch screen (454x240 resolution, 256 colors)
  • IR remote for co-driver/navigator use
  • light sensor at rear of unit for automatic dimming backlight function (manual backlight settings as well)
  • Typically $150 at discount sellers or Ebay
  • External ports for antenna and mini-USB connection
  • Waterproof and motorcycle capable

Speaking of which, i need to make the trek out and get that back... couple times in the past few weeks it would have been handy.

Chris, thanks very much for that information.

I have a Tom Tom One and it works well in the SVX. I keep it on the dash, or stuck to the driver side fixed window. It loads up quickly and works well.

Your Garmin looks the business. They have an updated model the 2820 that also has Bluetooth and this one can communicate to a helmet. This is the one for me, I'm going to buy one for the Blackbird.

Thanks again, great information.

Joe

Re: GPSs that DO work on dash of SVX

A couple of years ago, I worked on software for a new portable mobile GPS (company shuttered before product made it to market). Our units had a separate GPS receiver "mouse" that I'd put up on the dash, and it worked fine.

Perhaps the list of "GPS units that don't work in the SVX" would be a shorter list?

The manufacturers have been improving the satellite receiver electronics, so that the units will work better in "urban canyons" and under trees, and even inside buildings. So I'd say generally that newer models should work in the SVX.

Re: GPSs that DO work on dash of SVX

I just figured it to be easier for ones that did work versus did not. My logic was that I have or have used 7 different GPSs under the front glass of the SVX with ONLY the Garmin 2720 actually working. All the rest exhibited the same behavior, excellent signal outside the car, then when moved to the dash, all signal bars drop to near nothing.

Re: GPSs that DO work on dash of SVX

Chris,

I have a slight correction.

The windshield is coated with Titanium Oxide (TiO) not Titanium Dioxiide (TiO2).

Titanium Dioxide is a chemical used to make things white, such as toothpaste and paper and paint, especially pearly paint.

Titanium Oxide is a salt that is used to disrupt magnectic flux lines. Thts why our windshields rack hell with all sorts of pushbutton devices such as garage door openers, radar detectectors, GPS units, etc.
It will also mess up radar waves. Now if we could add it to paint we could have the first stealth cars.

Get on the job, Mr Engineer! We're waiting for this solution!

Larry, the only speed cameras over here still using radar are the static roadside ones.

The traffic police tend to use the laser guns because of better accuracy, narrower beam angle and consequently better selectivity over a longer range. Also they get an almost instantaneous readout, so you don't have time to react and slow down, assuming that you had a detector.

The best solution I have seen is a garage door opener that detects and scrambles laser signals as an [unfortunate] byproduct of using a laser signal to open your door.

You DO need to have a garage door that it opens though. If the police detect you have a "blocker" they will confiscate your car. The courts will hammer you if you don't actually have a door opening use for the device. Which they will confiscate anyway.

Stealth is badly needed.

Joe

Here in the states (some states?) its perfectly legal to have a scrambler. doesn't always stop you from getting a ticket!
