TC Bolts won't come off.

I've used all of my tricks. PB blaster, patience, tapping them with a hammer gently, whispering sweet nothings to them...

Then, I lost patience, said screw it and stripped one with a vice-grip.

Crud.

Any suggestions??

Can I take the tranny off with out removing those bolts?

Thanks

Breaker bar? I find one of those to be immensely useful on really tight nuts.

use a small die grinder and go at it. I had one hang up on me and it took me 20 minutes with a die grinder and it came right out. Just be careful you do not dig into the flexplate and be sure you buy new bolts

It's not a matter of torque, it's a matter of gripping those bolts. The heads on them are very shallow and the tool slips off. A 12mm wrench seems a bit too big and an 11mm is too small. I should have checked it with a standard size.

So I can just grind the heads off of the bolts that don't come off? I'll be carefull with the flexplate.

Thanks alot,

Noah

Agreed with Subster, it's a matter of gripping the bolts.

And young Tom's solution may be your only choice. Bolts must be removed.

Svxfiles likes to remove the alternator, and go in with a six point socket and several long extentions. I don't believe this has ever failed him. I've done it both ways, with luck so far.

If you are careful, you may get enough bite on the bolt using svxfiles method, even after the vise-grip mess.

Good luck, let us know what happened.

Thanks for the advice. Do you know what size they are? I'm at work now. I bet they are standard, not metric.

I'm willing to take the alternator off. I didn't realize it was an option.

In reply to the problem your having with torque convertor bolts. Just changed my transmission I had one bolt that did not want to come out. Got under the car with an air chizle with a pointed bit. Got on the edge of the flange and rotated the bolt out. Be sure to put in new bolts with locktite. Fishtail

They are 12mm, I use a six point 3/8" drive socket, and a 22" long extention, snaked under the intake manifold.
I hope it goes better for you.

I used a long extension taped to the 12mm socket under the manifold hooked up to a impact wrench on its LOWEST setting went slow and easy and they came right out.

if you remove the TB you can just use a 12mm 6point sockt on a ratchet...no extensions needed... this proves to be the best way to do it as there is no need to buy extensions and less chance you will round one off as there is less torque applied to remove it... Just an opinion

For some reason it doesn't seem like that would work. Isn't the bolt in like half an inch? Its been a while, so I could be wrong But the TB is true, I never removed my TB for the swap, there really was no need.

I held the prybar in one hand to steady the crank and just a ratchet and 12mm to break the bolt free standing on the pass side. I then used a 3 inch extension (with no ratchet) to turn the bolt quickly and remove it. turn the crank to next bolt and repeat. If I knew I didn't need that flexplate again, I'd probably just take a wizz wheel underneath and cut off the heads where you would install the stopper. The die grinder is a good idea, though if you have the patience and want to keep the flexplate.

Wow, great response! Thanks for all the advice. I'll be back at it on Monday. I have the throttle body off already so that's helpful in terms of access to the bolts. I'll let you all know how it went.

I didn't realize how many people have done the swap! That's cool.

Or how many times weve done it.
