Quick trans cooler question

Which is the line in, and which is the line out. Pics would be nice too. Thank you in advance.

Didn't see that pic in the How To before. Very easy to follow. I plan on adding a 4EAT cooler this Spring. My local Advance Auto Parts store sells some nice heavy-duty ones for around $45.00...

Chike,

I would suggest you look at the plate & fin coolers vice the tubed models. While I have no data to back up the claim, it seems common to hear people say they are more efficient coolers. I also remember hearing they flow across the top until the fluid warms up then all the cooling passages conduct - or something along those lines. Worth looking into anyway before plunking down your hard-earned $$$

Thanks Lee. I'll definitely do some research...

I plan on installing my aftermarket trans cooler in series with my stock cooler. I'm not looking for the largest cooler as a result, just something that will 'assist' the stock cooler and help keep operating temps low during the summer months...

your gearing should keep the tranny much cooler vs. the factory tranny anyway.

Agreed - as the ATF will be pumped around at a faster rate compared to a stock geared SVX.

While this is fine for drag strip racing and even AutoX (hard driving for short stints and periods to cool off inbetween), I'd really like to get my car out on the track at Summit Point or Virginia Int'l Raceway this year. However, I don't want to do this until I'm sure my trans will make it through the ordeal!

I've had a trans temp gauge hooked up (with a plate & fin cooler - http://www.bulkpart.com/Merchant2/me...ore_Code=MDITP) in my car since I had the original transmission rebuilt.

In my case, the 4.11 tranny runs about 10 degrees cooler as long you you never get stuck in traffic. Then the temp climbs to about the same spot as the old 3.545 transmission.

Perhaps interesting (and maybe not) is that I found when in traffic and it's hot enough to use the A/C, I run a few degrees cooler than without the A/C. I attribute this to the radiator fan being constantly on. So there may be some benefit for those driving situations to get one of the kits with an aux fan.

The thing i need to do next is get a tranny temp gauge. Only one other member had the same cooler i have and he said his temps never went above 180 degrees ever. And thats with hard driving in the summer.

Now that's some nice hard evidence to back up our speculation about switching to shorter gearing!

What were your average temps with the stock 3.545 gears and now with the 4.11 gears? How hot were the outside temps when you got these readings?

I'm reluctant to give numbers as factual evidence as I never wrote them down along with the outside temp.

Here's my impressions:

Stuck in stop & go - no difference - goes to about 200F

Driving in cold weather (for me anyway) - something less than 45F - my gauge never moves (it starts at 140F), but used to go to 150-160.

Driving in warm weather light traffic, steady 45-50mph - now around 160-170, used to be 170-180

Interesting results Lee. According to this chart posted by ImmortalSuby in a different thread, keeping ATF temps below 175* can extend the life of the trans to over 100K miles!!!

On question, when the car idles at a stop light or if you're stuck in traffic and tranny temps start to rise, what's the best thing to do for the trans?

1) Leave it in 'D' to keep the ATF slowly pumping around?
2) Put it in 'N' or 'P' to disengage the engine from the trans?
