soobiesvx93,

You must be the first abcd mallu i've met that likes the food from our state. Most seem to prefer the northy punjabi (chicken ticka masala) kinda food.

Phil,

I think there a couple of kinds of Vadai. I sent mom an email for both recipes.

My favorite Caribbean desi food is roti.

My mother's side of the family has some desi in-laws and I loved eating curried lamb, beef or chicken rotis that one of my aunt's who lived in Trinidad would make. Mmmm good!

Well i love chicken tikka masala. But one thing i have noticed about alot of malayalees who are brought up here is that they have no contact with kerala itself. Meaning they all follow and love north indian things. I stay true to my roots....when i drink with my cousins i'll wear a lungi just to be funny

you know that wouldn't be a bad idea for a thread where people can post food from their culture so others can make it and experience some new stuff. that and im all about food.

LOL ! soobiesvx93, if you want the full effect you should wear a lungi, an undershirt (the ones that looks like a muscle shirt with the two straps going over the shoulders, can't think of the name), grow a full thick mustache and drink Kallu (toddy), the alcoholic stuff made from the palm/coconut tree. I heard there used to be a store in Cali that sold 6 packs of Kallu.

By the way i still wear lungi at home to stay as hardcore mallu as i can (drives the wife nuts though)

Phil,

Here are the recipes for two kinds of Vada curtesy of my mom. You will probably have to take this to an Indian store to get all the ingredients.

PARIPPU VADA

Chana dal 1/2 cup
Peas dal or Tuar dal 1/2 cup
Whole red chillies 2
Asafoetida (Hing in Hindi) 1/4 tsp
Onion chopped 1 large (purple ones are better)
green chillies 2 chopped
curry leaves chopped a few

Soak the dals and red chillies in water for 1/2 hour. Drain well and grind coarsely in blender- WITHOUT WATER (if you have a coffee grinder or small jar for dry grinding that will be good).

Mix the other ingredients into the ground dal and mix well with 1/2 tsp salt. Heat oil in a deep saucepan/kadai and shape into vadas and fry on medium heat until the vada is brown. Drain on paper towels and enjoy.

URAD VADA

Urad dal 1 cup
Onions chopped 1 medium
green chillies chopped 3
curry leaves chopped a few

Soak dal in water for 40 minutes, drain and grind well without adding more than a few tablespoons of water.

Add other ingredients along with salt to the dal paste and keep aside for 20 mins. Dip fingers in a little water and take up a little of the mixture. Flatten it out with thumb and make a hole in the center with the thumb and slide into hot oil in kadai. Fry turning frequently until golden brown. Serve with coconut chutney.

COCONUT CHUTNEY

Grated coconut 1 cup
green chillie 1
ginger peeled and chopped 1/4 inch piece
roasted chana dal 1 tsp

Combine ingredients and blend with a little water. Add salt and squeeze a little lime juice. Mix well and serve. This chutney can be served with the parippu vada too.

Rbalach,

Thank you so much.

We have all those ingredients, since Belha makes a lot of Shak/Rotli and Dhal-Bhat.

We'll definitely give them a try.

Phil.

Right cowboys

Hey you desi guys. This SVX stuff is definitely broadening my horizons.

Who'd have thought buying a Japanese car would get you all these lovely Indian recipes?

This is the FAR SIDE man.
