Hmmmm....good question there Ron. I really haven't a clue, but I'll hazard a guess.

Nope. Although, it makes me wonder who produced the first manual that could be pulled into first from second without being at a dead stop. Ron.

In my youth I had a 60 Impala with 4 on the floor. I could down shift to first any where below 25mph, I had a 3.70 diff ratio. I could down shift to 2nd just below 60 mph.

"Mah Daddy had a Caddy wif an Automaddy". (Only in WVA, folks!)
The dash push buttons on Chrysler products were mechanically linked.
Packard had an electronic (solenoid) push button steering wheel stalk in '56, I think.
With regard to the European automatic. HINT: I DON'T KNOW! Rolls Royce would make sense, but I don't really consider it to be truly "massed produced". The Automatic Stick by VW, late '60's?
Opel perhaps, with its GM connections? Mercedes? Remember the DAF with its Justy-like rubber band?
Back to the Studebaker - The one I have in mind was a '49 or '50; the one with the bullet nose & "greenhouse" rear window. Another neat thing it had was a starter button under the clutch pedal. But no - that's not what made the "three-tree" unique. I'll give you old pharts 'til friday PM to get this one. Ron

Cool

OK - for all three of you who actually knew what a Studebaker was, here's the deal. At least on the '50, you could "pre-shift" it. That is take off in first normally, don't depress clutch, but shift the column lever into second. Guess what? No grinding noises! It's still in first. Now pop the clutch. It's now in second, etc. This car belonged to a friend, & I never drove it. I assume you could go from third to second in the same manner, but I don't remember. I also don't remember what the advantage was, except for those who can't walk & chew gum at the same time it was a blessing. Sorry - no winner of the coveted fanny pat award.
