Seems to me...

That your experiences may vary.....

As there are as many "types" of sand as there are beaches.... somehow this does not surprise me....

Were you in "manual" mode? Just wondering. I've never driven on the beach, but, I'd probably do it, given the chance. According to the Owner's manual, this is one of the times (along with snow) that manual mode should be used.

I baby my 93 as the prevous owner must have for htose low miles, but I did one occasion down at long beach, WA. Actually a official highway for a few miles on the sand itself, an alternative to the road. Very sandy, usualy very hard packed. SVX handled great but I didn't do any tricks, didn't want sand to get up any higher than the tire tread surface to screw with things. Did see a couple cars and even a 2 wheel drive pickup all need help out of the sand that day, but not the SVX!!!

If I were to take mine on the sand I would leave it in 1st gear the whole time. From my experiences with my Justy in the sand (narrow tires) I found that the sand really takes a LOT of power away. It was loads of fun though!! (wish I had pics)
